  1. Viscosity Motor oils

  2. Motor Oil • Motor oil is an oil used for lubrication of various internal combustion engines. The main function is to lubricate moving parts; it also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing, and cools the engine by carrying heat away from moving parts

  4. What is Viscosity Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid which is being deformed by either shearor tensile stress. Basically, this is how thick or thin a fluid is determined to be

  5. How do you measure it • A viscometer is an instrument used to measure the viscosity of a fluid. For liquids with viscosities which vary with flow conditions, an instrument called a rheometer is used. Viscometers only measure under one flow condition.

  6. How does this apply to me • All machinery containing moving parts have some type of lubricant • Lubricant is any substance used to reduce friction among moving parts • Examples • Engine oil • Transmission fluid • Gear oil

  7. How do I know what to use • 10w-40? • 5w-20? • SAE 30? • Operators manuals list specifications for each piece of machinery where a car truck or lawnmower

  8. What do the numbers mean • W on a viscosity rating it means that this oil viscosity has been tested at a Colder temperature • The first number on an oil can is the cold tested viscosity • The second number is the running temperature viscosity
