Intrinsic Viscosity

Intrinsic Viscosity is defined as the nonzero viscosity intercept extrapolated to zero concentration of solute, which is measure of the solute/solvent interaction. The Intrinsic Viscosityis generally designed by the symbol ŋ. Since this quantity is taken to represent a minimum as the concentration of solute approaches zero, it is assumed that the configuration of the solute is in relaxed condition and occupies a preferred, or optimal solvent accommodation. An expression known as the Mark-Howink relation can be used to determine values related to the shape and size of the particles giving rise to theIntrinsic Viscosity.

  1. Intrinsic Viscosity Intrinsic Viscosity is defined as the nonzero viscosity intercept extrapolated to zero concentration of solute, which is measure of the solute/solvent interaction. The Intrinsic Viscosityis generally designed by the symbol ŋ. Formula of Intrinsic Viscosity [ŋ] ₌ KM where K is a proportionality constant whose value depends upon the solvated configuration of the solute, an exponential term that depends on the solid geometry of the solute. M is the practical weight. A consequence of this definition for Intrinsic Viscosity is that high molecular weight polymers can be solvated in dilute system, and a fairly accurate measurement of the molecular weight can be made. This relationship also suggested that systems containing solvated high molecular weight polymers exhibit higher viscosity. Thus an operational use of term Intrinsic Viscosity has been taken to mean that system containing high molecular weight polymers exhibit Intrinsic Viscosity effects. The curve of a Newtonian fluid would be expected to exhibit a smooth exponential curve under these conditions. Instead, pseudoplastic fluid systems show deviations from smoothness that result from component aggression under changing temperature or pressure conditions.
