  2. Group Members • Nancy Ruhe, Facilitator • Amanda Forwerck • Pam Moore

  3. What is Kurzweil? Software that supports reading, writing, and learning for struggling readers, students with learning difficulties, students with attention deficit disorder, or those who are English language learners.

  4. Why use Kurzweil? Approximately 13% of PEVS students are disabled. The majority of these students have limited reading and writing skills. The use of this software will increase their ability to access the curriculum with a greater degree of independence.

  5. How does information get into Kurzweil? Text can be scanned, entered from another electronic format, or can be obtained from the internet. Many textbooks and literature books can now be obtained in electronic format.

  6. Sample of Kurzweil text.

  7. How can students use Kurzweil? • To read text. • To navigate through text. • To write and hear what they have written. • To take notes. • To take tests or complete worksheets.

  8. Student using Kurzweil in Amanda Forwerck’s classroom.

  9. What needs to happen to implement Kurzweil? • Develop awareness among teachers. • Designate and train staff to use Kurzweil. • Designate locations to install Kurzweil. • Train students to use Kurzweil.

  10. Amanda Forwerck explains Kurzweil’s highlighting features to Tillman Karl.

  11. What are benefits of using Kurzweil? • Greater independence for students. • Fewer staff members needed to read tests/materials. • Students have shown preference for working on computer compared to completing paper/pencil tasks.

  12. Pam Moore points out voice options at the March 22, Kurzweil presentation.

  13. Tillman Karl and Nancy Ruhe participate in group discussion at the March 22, Kurzweil presentation.

  14. Recommendations following Kurzweil group presentation. • Designate a teacher’s aide to manage Kurzweil in the High School and Middle School buildings. • Have a central location where Kurzweil is available. • Introduce Kurzweil to all teachers at the end of the school year so they can think about how to use during the summer.
