  4. SBAR technique provides a framework for effective communication among members of the healthcare team SBAR helps to create an environment that allows individuals to speak and express their concerns It helps to ensure that patient’s get what they need when they need it. S B A R

  5. Situation: the punch line, 5-10 seconds, get someone’s attention Background: the context, objective data, the numbers, how did we get here Assessment: what’s the problem? Recommendation: What do we want to do and when So What is SBAR?

  6. SITUATION I am calling about….. The problem is…… I have assessed the following……. Vital signs are…….. PAWS Score is…….. I am concerned about…….. BACKGROUND The patient has a history of……. The skin is……. Extremities are…. Oxygen therapy……. CYPADM status…… SBAR

  7. ASSESSMENT This is what I think the problem is….. OR Im not sure what the problem is but the patient is getting worse OR The patient is unstable RECOMMENDATION I suggest/request that you…………. Are there any tests needed before you arrive? Would you like me to do anything before you arrive? SBAR

  8. Can you come and see… ‘Baby Jones has bronchiolitis and his sats have dropped. He’s also tachycardic and hasn’t managed to feed very much. I’ve tried to suctioned him and put the 02 up but it’s not making any difference to his sats’.

  9. Baby Jones • Situation: This is Nurse …… in ward … I am concerned about about baby Jones. He is a 3 month old with RSV positive bronchiolitis. His spo2 has dropped from >95 to 91%. PAWS is 3 with resp rate of 65 and he is tachycardic. • Background: He is a term baby, previously well with no post natal problems. • Assessment: He has only managed to take 2oz feed all day. I have tried suction and increased the 02 to 2litres but it has not improved his status. • Recommendation: I think he needs his gases checked. I need you to come and see him now.
