  2. Summary of “Measurement in Sport: The Long and Short of It” Article • Measurement is always used in sport - Determines results of an activity - Communicates rules of sports/games • Best to measure in same unit • Measuring devices must be accurate

  3. Description of “Target Throw” Activity • Students line up around square perimeter. • On signal, move around square. • On “Throw!” Throw disc (bean bags) at hoop. • On “Go!” run and grab disc (bean bag). • Repeat. • Points system for hitting, touching hoop.

  5. Description of our Measurement Content • We will have students measure in • Inches • Feet • Degrees Fahrenheit • We will have them • Estimate • Review their estimation • Compare correlating measurements

Description of Integrated Activity • Pairs of students will throw bean bags at hula hoops. • First- • Students estimate how far they’ll throw the bean bag • Take resting temperatures • Record both • Next- • students take turns alternately throwing and measuring/recording throws • Last- • Compare estimation to measurement • Take active temperature and compare to resting

  7. Assessment of Academic Performance – Grade 4 • Score sheet • Guide and help to assess the students’ progress • Students will use • estimation, measurement, and addition/subtraction to analyze their performance. • Informally Asses • Make sure that their on task and performing correctly

Our Activity aligns with the 4th Grade Mathematics NCSCoS Goal 2.01 COMPETENCY GOAL 2:  The learner will recognize and use standard units of metric and customary measurement. 2.01     Solve problems using measurement concepts and procedures involving: Elapsed time. Equivalent measures within the same measurement system. 2.02     Estimate and measure using appropriate units. Capacity (cups, pints, quarts, gallons, liters). Length (miles, kilometers) Mass (ounces, pounds, grams, kilograms). Temperature (Fahrenheit, Celsius).
