  2. Basics on Cornell notes • Start by putting your heading and the topic on your paper • Make sure you have a 2 inch margin on the left • You will put your questions on the left side • Put the information from the slides on the right • Write your summary before class is over • ANY QUESTIONS???

  3. Articles • What are they?

  4. Articles are: • The, a, an • The=definite article. It indicates a specific person, place or thing • A, an=indefinite article. It indicates a non-specific person, place or thing

  5. Indefinite vs. definite articles • I want a cookie. –I want any cookie. It can be peanut butter, chocolate chip, oatmeal etc. VERSUS • I want the cookie with the biggest chocolate chip in it. I want a specific type of cookie, not just any cookie.

  6. *I want a cookie. *I want the cookie with the most chocolate chips in it.

  7. ALL SPANISH NOUNS ARE either masculine or feminine. MASCULINE FEMININE Nouns ending in –a are usually feminine. Exception: El agua • Nouns ending in –o are usually masculine.

  8. Definite and Indefinite articles MASCULINE, DEFINITE MASCULINE, INDEFINITE SINGULAR Un chico-a boy PLURAL Unoschicos-some boys SINGULAR El chico-the boy PLURAL Los chicos-the boys

  10. To form the plural of a noun… If noun ends in vowel If a noun ends in consonant Just add –es Ejemplo: La celebración, lascelebraciones. LIBRO p.61 • Just add –s Ejemplo: el libro, los libros

  12. What’s a noun? • A noun is used to name a person, place thingor abstract idea. Mr. Williams, Milwaukee, honesty and teddy bear

  13. What’s an adjective? • Something that describes a noun. • Exp.: smart girl, pretty skyline, disappointing test scores, large meals

  14. Why do we have noun-adjective agreement? • Because in Spanish adjectives match the gender and number of the nouns they describe.

  15. Here’s how: SINGULAR PLURAL Los chicOSaltOS-the tall boys Las chicASaltAS-the tall girls • El chicOaltO-the tall boy • La chicAaltA-the tall girl

  16. In addition: • Many adjectives that end in a consonant match both genders. Exp: El amigo jóveno la amigajóven • Some adjectives that end in a consonant add an –a to form the feminine singular. These need to be memorized. Exp: el chicotrabajador/la chicatrabajadora

  17. Making adjectives plural: • To make an adjective plural add-s if it ends in a vowel; add-es if it ends in a consonant. Exp: laschicastrabajadoras Los chicostrabajadores p. 66-Libro
