How Did We Get Started? • September 2010~ New administrator with history of PBIS experience • October 2010~ Teachers and principal notice behaviors in the building they would like to address: Hallway Behavior Lunch Procedures Playground • November 2010 ~ Positive Behavior Support ideas shared with staff during PD time • January - March 2011 ~ Addams Staff develop Matrix for Behavior Expectations for the building • August 2011~ Building PBIS Committee formed, developed plan to launch school-wide program

  3. What’s New at Addams? Positive Behavior Support Intervention PBIS In September 2006, the Michigan State Board of Education established that “it is the policy of the State Board of Education that each school district in Michigan implement a system of school-wide positive behavior support strategies.” School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, team-based framework for creating and sustaining safe and effective schools. Emphasis is placed on prevention of problem behavior!

Plan when to use the bathroom and take care of needs Always Respectful Use toilet and sink appropriately Respect Privacy Kindness Counts Silent Smiles Safety First Wash hands, use soap dispenser appropriately Throw paper in trash can Report problems to the office Outstanding Learners Bathroom Expectations

  12. Be patient, the office is a busy, important area in our school!   13. Rewards • Students earn oak leaves daily for practicing the Addams behavior expectations. • Oak leaves are displayed in the hallway. Every Monday 2 leaves are drawn from each classroom and students are recognized on the broadcast. They also receive a small snack. • At the end of the month, bags are weighed and the top lower el. and upper el classrooms participate in a special activity.

  14. Addams Think Tank • A safe place for students to go when they have exhausted the classroom behavior management procedures • Allows a break for the teacher and student • Reflection opportunity for student, brief writing piece is completed by student k-2 and 3-5 • Provides data for staff in terms of minor behavioral infractions

  15. Bully Prevention in Positive Behavior Support Giving students the tools to reduce bullying behavior through the blending of school wide behavior support. Stop Teach universal stop signal when someone is using mean or hurtful language. Walk Walkaway if the person continues the hurtful behavior Talk Talk to an adult if the previous steps have been unsuccessful and you feel unsafe
