NordMin • Aim is to connect stakeholders of the Nordic mining and mineral sector • The network should work as a platform for existing and future Nordic cooperation in the mining and mineral sector. • Research, Innovation and Education are the core elements of NordMin • Work program and Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda adopted in 2013 • Funded by Nordic Council of Ministers for four years (2013-2016), 30 miljDkr • Maintain and increase the activities over time by leverage.

  2. Core actions The NordMin knowledge network on sustainable non-energy raw materials will have a number of core actions: Workshops as a stakeholder forum and for identifying key challenges and joint collaborative leverage projects within the defined themes 2. A Post graduate program with joint Nordic courses on relevant themes 3. Preparatory projects based on outcomes from workshops 4. Research and Innovation program

  3. Main research and innovation challenges • Improve exploration and mining technologies that are necessary to satisfy the growing worldwide demand. World class discoveries are made less often and research into exploitation of deep deposits as well as development of knowledge of unconventional resources is important. • Improved resource and energy efficiency in any process along the value chain ("make more out of less"). • Improve the best available technology and improve reduction of the environmental footprintalong the value chain • Ensure that, in harmony with stakeholders and the society at large, the flow of minerals and metals needed by the society is ensured and that this is done within a sustainable framework. • Ensure the highest-quality training of future generations, which will have to deal with the multi-faceted raw material issues. Training of professionals is also necessary to disseminate state-of-the-art knowledge and good practices in the fast evolving field of research on non-energy raw materials.

Core themes in the strategic research and innovation agenda: • CT4: Metallurgy • RDI topics • Processing of low grade and complex materials in the most efficient and sustainable way • Treatment of metallurgical by-products and waste with a maximum recovery of bulk and accompanying minor metals • New technologies for recovery of accompanying and critical metals for better utilisation of natural resources • Design of large integrated multi-technology products and processes by flexible and concurrent design methodologies and tools as well as modelling and simulation • Tackle the recurrent existing metallurgical challenges focusing on sustainable and technological overlaps in the field which include recovery energy from slags, neutralization of iron in hydrometallurgy, liquid solid separation, elimination of metals in effluents.

Call for proposals, timetable: • NordMin Call opens 18 October 2013 • Applications should be submitted before 13 December 2013. • Applications are reviewed by the International Review Group until 31 January 2014 • Mid of February 2014, final decision is made the Steering Committee based on the recommendation from the International Review board. • End of March 2014, signing of contracts • 1 April 2014, projects start working

  14. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA • Deadline 13 December, at 17.00 CET to call@nordmin-network.org • Application forms available on NordMin website: www.nordmin-network.org • All fields of the project description are filled in and their respective length does not exceed a maximum of 10 pages, excluding the annexes • FORM A, FORM B, FORM C and FORM D • Each proposal must involve organizations from a minimum of three Nordic countries including Greenland. Cooperation between two or more regions of one single country is not considered to be transnational • The coordinator of the consortium applying for funding must be established in one Nordic country • Applicants coming from non Nordic countries can be part of the project consortia, on the condition that they make proof of covering their own costs by providing a signed declaration

  15. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA • The project duration shall not exceed 30 months • The total NordMin budget for individual project proposals is restricted to maximum 5 MDKr. • Involvement of at least one Nordic industry organization in terms of a private company or an industry association representing private companies • The industrial funding at a minimum level of 20%, but 50% is to be aimed for, by cash or in-kind. • NordMin contribution to total project cost can be maximum 70%. • The contribution of one country should not exceed 70% of total project cost

  16. EVALUATION, SCORING AND SELECTION PROCEDURES • The evaluation procedures are designed to identify the best proposals in terms of scientific excellence, innovation potential, judged impact on promoting competitiveness in the Nordic mining- and mineral sector and Nordic cooperation and added value. • The evaluation of the scientific content is made by an international review panel. Nordic added value is evaluated by the steering committee. Final decision will be made by the steering committee. • There will be a peer review evaluation process by the international panel of experts • 3 independent reviewers for the same proposal, out of which one is appointed as the rapporteur and consolidates the evaluation report on behalf of all the evaluators of that respective proposal • Overall rating 12.5 - 15 (“A”): Very favourable recommendation for funding • Overall rating 10 - 12 (“B”): Can be funded • Overall rating 0 - 9.5 (“C”): Not favourable for funding.
