NASW-NJ Mission Statement The New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers is a diverse membership organization that promotes, develops, and strengthens the professional practice of social work and social workers. Through advocacy and public policy, NASW-NJ affects progressive social change and social justice for individuals, families, and communities. NASW-NJ Unit Leader Orientation

Role of Regional Representatives • Will serve as the Board liaison to Unit leaders (Chair, Co-chair, Steering Committee). • When a position becomes vacant, will help identify potential Unit leaders. • Will attend Unit event(s) organized by a new Unit leader (when possible) and help leaders develop a Steering Committee for their Unit (if needed). • Will help “roll out” new ideas/programs in their regions/Units (e.g. promoting Prospective SW program, share information re: Conference and CE programs, etc.). • Will assist in bringing Unit leadership from their Region to report at Board events (each Unit to report annually).   6. Regional Map Northwest Region include the units of Sussex/Warren, Hunterdon/Somerset & Morris. Northeast Region include the units of Bergen/Passaic, Essex, Hudson & Union. Central Region include the units of Monmouth/Ocean, Mercer/Burlington & Middlesex. Southern Region include units of Camden/Gloucester/Salem & Atlantic/Cape May/Cumberland.   8. Unit Leaders Unit Leaders are vital to the success of our organization! Unit Leaders are one of the many volunteer leadership roles within NASW-NJ that helps augment the work of paid staff, allowing NASW-NJ to provide regional events and programming for social workers across New Jersey. Role of Unit Chair and Co-Chair • One year commitment • Plan and host events/activities for your Unit at least four (4) times a year • Communicate NASW news and information to members in conjunction with Regional Representatives • Communicate Unit news and information to Chapter office to highlight in NASW publications • Welcome new members in your unit and encourage others to join • Encourage members to run for office and nominate members for NASW awards NASW-NJ Unit Leader Orientation

Role of Steering Committee • A Steering Committee consists of 2-3 Unit members who assist the Unit Leaders with planning and hosting Unit activities and events • Provide event refreshments, assist in finding event locations and speakers, generate service project ideas, contact new members, and PR • The Committee helps to engage Unit members and develop future leadership NASW-NJ Unit Leader Orientation

  12. Information and Forms Our Unit Leader Toolkit will provide you access to forms, documents, information and resources you will need as Unit Leader. Please let us know if there is anything we can create or provide that will help you in your role! Unit Leader Toolkit: • Visit www.naswnj.org • Hover over “About Us” and click on “Units” • Click on “Unit Leader Toolkit” on the right side • Log in with username and password. Important documents & forms you will need: • Event Announcement Request Form • Event Summary Form • Request for Payment (RFP) – reimbursement for refreshments (there is a $7.50 budget per attendee) • Event Sign-in Sheet – confirms who attended (Unit Leaders must sign in too!) Unit Events: The Basics Types of Events • Networking, social, educational, continuing education, social work month event, advocacy, public service, or volunteer Location to Host & Time • Assisted living facilities, libraries, non-profit organizations, Chapter office, restaurants • Events run 2 hours, weekday evenings Choose a Topic & Invite a Speaker • Unit member, Chapter staff, social work or other professionals Involve Your Members • Ask for ideas • Invite them to join Steering Committee • Encourage them to bring a friend (non-members can attend one event before they are asked to join.) Tips • Ask your fellow Unit Leaders for assistance via email naswnj_unit_leaders@googlegroups.com • Utilize Steering Committee members for assistance • Use the Annual Planning Calendar and plan a few months out • Submit request form to host CE event HERE • Consider working with other Units to share a program • Consider working with the local Private Practice Special Interest Group to share a event • Review list of creative suggestions (in progress) for your Unit from other Unit Leaders NASW-NJ Unit Leader Orientation

Unit Event: Announce Your Event Schedule & Promote Your event to NASW Members (in this order please): • Fill out the Meeting Announcement online form (available in Unit Manual) at least 30 days prior to the event • Staff will post event on NASW Calendar • Send an email to your Unit Members to announce event; include the Calendar Link and ask members to register online; ALSO be sure to include “NASW-NJ” in the subject line. • Chapter will promote event in newSWire™ • Send out 2 reminder emails to your Unit members: one two weeks before the event and another a few days before event • Promotion should not imply endorsement of a specific person, product, or service by NASW or NASW-NJ.   19. Unit Event: Hosting • Provide networking time before event. Meet and welcome 1st time attendees • Welcome & Introductions – (Photo opportunity. Specifically welcome new Members/students/new attendees. Invite sharing from all: where do you work? What is your NASW involvement?) • Welcome Regional Rep and/or NASW-NJ Staff (if present) • Share NASW/NASW-NJ News & Upcoming Events with attendees from newSWire™ (if no Regional Rep or Staff) • Purchase simple refreshments (maximum $7.50 per person) based on headcount • Sign-in sheet (available in Unit Manual) • Talk with new members, students, 1st time attendees at the end of the event. Communication with Members Unit Leaders are responsible for: • Sending a monthly welcome email to new NASW-NJ members • Membership Coordinator sends an email to all Unit Leaders around the 5th of each month with a list of new members and instructions for emailing • Promoting unit events via email • Be sure to email unit members to announce upcoming events and to remind/encourage them to register at least 3 times before event Tools for emailing: • Group Email through Chapter Website (see next slide for instructions) • One way communication with members. You can email them but members can only reply to sender. • Chapter staff can use this too! Tips for emailing: • Email should be easy to read and informational • Less is more! Use bullets for easy reading • Be sure to include “NASW-NJ” in the subject line of your emails • If you are asked to send out an advertisement, please have the individual who asked contact Willis Williams, Administrative Assistant wwilliams.naswnj@socialworkers.org for information about advertising.   22. Communication with Members Group Email Instructions You can send email to your members via the email feature on the chapter’s website. Please follow the instructions below: • After you log in you will be at your profile page • Under “My Profile” select “Groups” • Select Your Unit’s name • At the “Unit Name” page select “Options” icon (looks like a tool wrench) • At the drop down window select “Email All Group Members” • Compose email • Preview your email • Send or Submit your email NASW-NJ Unit Leader Orientation

Continuing Education Events • Units can offer CEU events as a way to encourage attendance and recruitment • Two CEU workshops exclusive for the Unit each year • Submit a request HERE, at least 60 days in advance, to discuss topics and schedule program • Identify and reserve free location (minimum of 30 seats). Check with your Unit members ~ they often have ideas for program locations including agencies, schools or libraries • Chapter will promote event ONLY to Unit Members • Promote your event to your members through your Group Email • Chapter will mail CEU materials and instructions to Chair • Remember: Non-members will pay $30 at the door NASW-NJ Unit Leader Orientation

  26. Recruitment & Retention New Members • You will receive reports (of your new members) once a month from Membership Coordinator • Call and/or send an email to new unit members once a month. Introduce yourself, welcome members, and invite them to your next event Member Requests • Forward all member requests to Membership Coordinator to resolve. For example: • Change of email • Change of address • Add to/Remove from listserv • Advertising requests • Other requests • Leadership Continuity • Encourage & nurture consistent attendance • Discuss topics of interest to attendees • Recognize & mentor potential unit leaders • Establish Steering Committee to provide leadership opportunities to others; encourage consideration of leadership position. CEU Incentive for Unit Leaders • Unit Leadership Training = 1 CEU Voucher • 4 Unit events = 1 CEU Voucher • You may receive a maximum of 5 CEU Vouchers during any given fiscal year • CEU Vouchers are not redeemable for the Annual Conference or special CEU events. CEU Vouchers may not be transferred to other members. 1 (Fall) Training = 1 CE Voucher 1 (Spring) Training = 1 CE Voucher 4 Unit Events (Sept-Dec) = 1 CE Voucher 4 Unit Events (Jan-Apr) = 1 CE Voucher 4 Unit Events (May-Aug)= 1 CE Voucher TOTAL (Maximum) = 5 CE Vouchers per year NASW-NJ Unit Leader Orientation
