American Head & Neck Society Statement of Professionalism and Ethics The American Head and Neck Society is committed to promulgating and promoting professionalism and ethical behavior in its membership. As members, we value the trust placed in us by our patients, colleagues and society, and therefore willingly pledge to uphold the ethical and professional principles and virtues of medicine as outlined below. We have a fundamental and sacred duty to our patients. Therefore, we will: • Recognize that the welfare of our patients is the paramount priority • Serve as advisors to our patients to help them navigate complex medical decisions • Discuss the risks, benefits and alternatives of appropriate therapeutic options • Be respectful of our patients’ viewpoints and beliefs • Support our patients physically, emotionally and spiritually • Care for and support our patients at the end of life • Offer support and care to our patients’ families • Strive to enhance and maximize our clinical, surgical and interpersonal competence • Maintain a caring and respectful demeanor We have a responsibility to our colleagues and teachers. Therefore, we will: • Willingly acknowledge our skills and expertise to those wishing to learn • Honor our teachers for devoting their time and energy on our behalf • Assist our colleagues, technically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually • Respect our colleagues from other disciplines and practice multi-disciplinary care • Provide legal opinions based only on evidenced-based practice and standards of care • Offer care without regard to gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status or ethnicity We also have an obligation to the faith entrusted in us by society. AHNS Strategic Plan • Mission Statement – The AHNS’ mission is to advance the education, research and quality of care for the head and neck oncology patient. • Values – Patient Centered, Ethical, Collaborative, Innovative, Value Based, Global • Goals – • Education: To be the premier educational resource for head and neck surgery and oncology • Research: To be the leaders in head and neck cancer research • Membership: To maximize member engagement • Organizational Capacity: To have sufficient organizational capacity to achieve the Mission

AHNS President’s Report • AACR – First meeting with the AACR prior to COSM. • 180 Registrants • Diversity Task Force – New Task Force which seeks to recognize, utilize, and celebrate differences, and to cultivate the careers of women, minorities and members of the LGBT community of the AHNS while promoting the retention and advancement for all members. • Myers Family Minority Medical Student Fellowship - This program is designed to expose promising individuals from traditionally under-represented minority backgrounds early in their careers to our wonderful field of Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery. • Expanding Educational Opportunities – • Soon to be launched web site with patient educational materials • Committees developing webinars

  22. 2017 AHNS Annual Meeting • PROJECT: Regent is active and receiving data uploads. There are currently two tracks: 1) Specific procedures and diagnoses where gaps on care are identified and measure group created that will satisfy criteria for participation in MIPS and reimbursement. For neck the following were selected: early stage oral cavity cancer, unilateral vocal cord paralysis, and the adult with a neck mass • PROGRESS: The CAC for head and neck has had one conference call to discuss • PROJECT: Regent Registry Early stage oral cavity cancer registry • PROGRESS:1) Identify quality measures for data capture • 2) Identify data elements for Maintenance of certification fulfilling Practice Improvement Module data elements • The Quality Committee will review the data definitions (elements) for acquisition in Regent. • At the direction of AAO-HNS convene conference call with Fig MD to initiate creating data definitions.   24. 2017 AHNS Annual Meeting • Current Projects: • HOW TO GET AHEAD (& NECK) START TO YOUR CAREER 4-25 @ 6:30 in this room • Join the Ad Hoc Young Members Committee, the AHNS Women’s Task Force and the Diversity Ad Hoc Committee for this hour-long breakfast session looking at Professional Advancement, Job/Contract Negotiation, Establishing Translational Relationships and Partnering with Industry • Other Projects being proposed/planned: • Networking Happy Hour/Q&A session at the 2017 AAO • Joint Session at 2018 AHNS – Understanding the Current National Healthcare Climate Ad Hoc Young Members Task Force

Advanced Training Council • Current Projects: • PROJECT:2018 Fellowship Match • PROGRESS: Currently a total of 48 applications, with 43 programs offering 58 fellowships • Interview period ends: June 1 • Ranking period runs: June 1 through June 15 - Match runs: July 1 • WELCOME Newly AHNS-Accredited Programs: University of Wisconsin • University Hospital Cleveland Medical Center • Fox Chase Cancer Center/Temple University • PROJECT: DO Eligibility for the AHNS Fellowship Match • PROGRESS: DOs will be eligible for participation – ATC is working to clarify requirements with regards to ACGME-accredited residencies in Otolaryngology, General Surgery and Plastic Surgery • PROJECT: Accreditation & Certification • PROGRESS: The ATC is collaborating with TAC in exploring issues and options regarding fellowship accreditation and certification. These issues are closely related to the education and curriculum project as mentioned below. • PROJECT: EDUCATION/ Curriculum project • PROGRESS: The collaboration between the ATC and the Education Committee continues – please refer to the Education Committee’s Report in this Council Book for the completed documents to date.

  29. Bylaws Changes • There are no formal changes this year but the committee will be working on implementing the changes based on membership requirements and re-organization over the next year.

  30. 2017 AHNS Annual Meeting Development Committee RECAP of FUNDRAISING FOR THE 2017 MEETING The total of development funds raised for the 2017 meeting was $110,000. Total Confirmed Support: $110,000 Goal: $53,500 Over Goal: $56,500

  31. 2017 AHNS Annual Meeting • Current Projects: • Do You Know Your Guidelines • Begun in 2015, this initiative has generated several strong guidelines articles, with 10-12 more in progress currently. The Committee is working to complete this initiative this year. • National Curriculum for Head & Neck Surgery Fellowships • Needs assessment phase is nearly complete. Development of guidelines for establishing a standardized fellowship structure has begun, along with development of a recommended syllabus. • AHNS Content Review • The committee continues to vet position papers and manuscripts drafted by AHNS committees/task forces • New Projects • Addition to the National Curriculum – Standardized Cases • Podcasts – enhancing awareness of what H&N Surgeons do • Medical Student Fellowship – proposed 1-month rotation for med students interested in HNS Education Committee

  33. 2017 AHNS Annual Meeting Ethics and Professionalism Committee PROJECTS: Focused on expanding services to members regarding the meetings Developing a survey on the impact of the code Developed Social Media guidelines and policy Coordinate with the ATC and Journal Club Implemented and Monitored the AHNS Code for Interactions with Companies. Meet as necessary (or when directed by the President) to discuss and offer council for specific ethical issues that involve the Society or its members.

  35. 2017 AHNS Business Meeting History Committee - Interviews of Past Presidents / Significant Leaders of AHNS and Predecessor Societies Senior members identified for interview: E. Myers, C. Cummings, P. Gullane, R. Sessions.Interviewers identified for 3 of 4 – Myers and Gullane interviews completed. - Past Presidents Page on AHNS Website Trying to establish more uniform content for these biographies.Volunteers are welcome to complete any missing biographies. - History Presentations at Annual Meetings Will discuss with program committee possible allocation of time for such a presentation. Goal is to add this to 2018 program if approved. - Historical Content on AHNS Website Website has been adjusted to allow easier access to history content.Previously transcribed interviews are now more readily accessible.Archival material may be added, as well as other content.

  36. 2017 AHNS Annual Meeting Humanitarian Committee Consensus Statement – Thyroid Surgery Dr. Zafereo is working on a consensus statement/guideline for performing thyroid surgery internationally. The committee will review the draft at their on-site COSM meeting, and present to Council for final approval later in 2017. Survey for position paper on flap surgery Drs. Luginbuhl, Curry and Zender are researching free flap surgeries, and will be surveying surgeons who regularly conduct international head & neck surgery, asking for their input on 1) the ethics of what’s appropriate vs. what’s not appropriate, 2) how people plan for it and what is the appropriate infrastructure needed to make it successful, 3) what to expect when you get there, logistics, and how to manage patients in critical situations, and 4) how post-operative care is managed, and what to do when you have failure. Oral Cavity paper for the African Head & Neck Society Dr. Moore has drafted this paper and solicited feedback from leaders in the African HNS. The Humanitarian Committee will review and discuss the paper at their COSM meeting.

  39. 2017 AHNS Annual Meeting Publications Committee Facilitates expedient peer review of submitted manuscripts to JAMA Otolaryngology from our annual meeting Proposes members to be considered for the JAMA Otolaryngology International Advisory Board and provides selected Viewpoints Facilitated simultaneous publication of 5 studies in JAMA Otolaryngology with their presentations at the 9th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer Reviewing submissions that will be presented at our 2017 AHNS annual meeting in San Diego and aim to have 1-3 projects simultaneously published in the journal
