Lesson 1Cannabis – the facts! • Individual Task • Your teacher will read out a series of statements relating to Cannabis. • You will be aware of the “Fact”, “Myth” and “Not Sure” cards in different parts of the room • After each statement decide without conferring whether it is a fact, myth or if they are not sure and stand by that card. • Be prepared to share your thoughts with the rest of the class.

Lesson 2Risky situations Task 1 You will be shown a series of pictures. • In pairs/groups, discuss what you can see happening in the photos and what drug is present in the picture. • Make note of your answers on ‘the Risky Situations – Questions to Consider’ handout • Be prepared to share your views with the class.

Lesson 3Keeping Safe TASK 1 in each of the 4 groups, you will be allocated a scenario. • Someone is very drowsy but conscious • Someone is overheated and dehydrated • Someone who is tense and panicky • Someone has collapsed and lost consciousness. • You should imagine that you are with this person who has taken drugs. On your flipchart note down: • Which drug could be involved? • What they should DO and what they should NOT DO to help the person? • Present your findings to your class.

  14. Lesson 3Keeping Safe Task 2 • Think about how you can stay safe on a night out referring back to the previous exercise. • As a class, we should agree on the top ten tips to stay safe on a night out.

  15. Keeping SafeKey Messages • Understanding basic first aid enables you to have the skills to help someone if you come across them in a drug-related situation. • It is important to understand there are ways to avoid likelihood of becoming involved in a risky situation on a night out.

Lesson 4Social Implications of Substance Misuse Task1 • In small groups, think of the individuals or groups who are, in your opinion, affected by someone else’s substance misuse. • Make a list. • Try not to restrict your thinking just to their immediate circle of family, friends and associates. • Did you think of the following examples on the next slide? • In what way do you think some of these groups of people would be affected

Lesson 4Social Implications of Substance Misuse Task 2 – Scenarios • Using the ‘Who’s Affected by Substance Misuse’ scenario sheet, discuss and make a note of the behaviours that may occur as a result of this substance misuse. • think about who this could affect and how e.g. physically, socially, mentally and financially. • Once the groups have a list of all those affected, distribute the worksheet - Who’s MOST affected by substance misuse (target board) • Write these on the target with those MOST affected closer to the bullseye and those LESS affected further away. • As a class discuss the feedback from each scenario in terms of who’s affected and in what way.

Lesson 4Social Implications of Substance Misuse Task 3 – Harm Reduction • In groups, discuss what could be done in each scenario to reduce the impact on others. • Consider both an individual and community level, e.g. Individual level - individuals can make sure they dispose of used bottles etc. safely, and at community level – more bins/drug equipment disposal bins could be made available. • Discuss feedback as a class.

Social Implications of Substance MisuseKey Messages • It is important to understand that substance misuse, either their own or that of others, not only affects the user, but has wider implications and affects those around them. • Substance misuse affects society as a whole and not just immediate family, friends and associates. • Individual responsibility over drug decisions should take into account societal implications.

Lesson 1Alcohol and Advertising Task 1 • Group Task - What alcohol advertising you are aware of?(e.g. packaging, social media, television, celebrity endorsement, sponsorship of sports, music and cultural events, and across digital platforms and the internet, including social media.) •  discuss the adverts on the following slide “The Power of Advertising”: • Which of these alcohol related products would appeal mostly to adults? • Which ones would appeal mostly to kids and teens? • How can you tell?

Class discussion • How do you think drug problems could be managed in their community? • are there particular issues that you want to find out more about?

Trouble in townKey Messages • Young people should be aware of and consider substance related issues within their own community and consider how this impacts on other people. • Members of the public should never move needles and syringes. They should be reported to the local council for removal.
