  3. This government study showed that 21% to 23% of adult Americans were unable to: • "able to locate information in text" • "make low-level inferences using printed materials" • "integrate easily identifiable pieces of information.”

The least literate group earned a yearly average of $2,105 and about 50 million adults (25% to 28% of them) in the next-least literate of the five literacy groups earned a yearly average of $5,225 at a time when the Census Bureau considered poverty level for an individual to be $7,363 per year.

  10. What if we didn’t already know… • The pre-treated pollen samples were washed with deionised water and dried in an oven at 60 _C for 2 days. They were then combusted using the sealed-tube technique in the presence of pre-cleaned CuO and Ag wire and converted to graphite using the H2/Fe method [12]. AMS 14C measurements were carried out using the ANTARES facility at ANSTO [13]. The 14C/13C ratio of each sample was measured relative to the NIST standard of oxalic acid I(HOxI). What does logical arrangement look like? • What kinds of expectations can I have for reading a logically arranged piece? • What kinds of events or feelings are “meaning making” feelings or lessons? And which are not? • Ability to identify these elements enables understanding of Main Idea, Theme, Sequence, Thesis
