What Is ISO 14001? • Voluntary international standards established by the international organization for standardizations • Made up of national standards institutes from 55 countries (government and business sectors) • Standards are required by the market for: • Quality • Safety • Environmental management

  3. What ISO 14001 Is Not? • ISO 14001 is not a regulatory compliance audit. • It does not specify specific environmental performance criteria.

  4. The Key Elements Of ISO 14001 • Environmental policy and commitment • Commitment to continual performance improvement to prevention of pollution • Planning • Implementation and operations • Checking and corrective actions • Management review

  5. Environmental Management System “part of the overall management system that includes organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the environmental policy.”

  6. Environmental Management System • Environmental Policy • Organizational Chart • Document Hierarchy • Register of Significant Environmental Aspects • Goals and Targets • Waste Management Practices

  7. Environmental & Safety Policy Cordis is committed to conducting business in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. To fulfill this commitment, our leadership programs will: • Establish safe work practices and environmental protection as areas of accountability against which management and employee performance is measured • Ensure the design and manufacture of environmentally sound and efficient products and processes, pollution prevention activities, and a workplace free of incidents and injuries • Promote compliance with applicable corporate J&J policies and guidelines, laws and governing regulations, and other voluntary principles to which we subscribe • Cultivate a safety and environmentally conscious culture through management commitment, prevention efforts, training and education. • Support sustainable industrial development and foster the integration of safety and environmental goals into our business practices To that end, Cordis management and its associates are committed to being active partners and participants in our environmental and safety programs, and to continuously improve the standards by which we operate.

  10. ISO 14001 Does Not . . . • Specify specific environmental performance criteria • A site can simply acknowledge their aspects and plan for potential impacts • Plan real performance improvement

  11. Achieving ISO 14001 • Over $50,000 for five sites • High level of commitment by management • Little value for the environment • Sites do not focus on performance • Reduced incident rates • Better compliance with regulation • Reduced environmental impact

  12. Implementing ISO 14001 • Meeting requirements: • Policies • Procedures • Rules and responsibilities • Training • Records What about performance?

  13. Environmental Managers Must Change! • Past Focus: • Compliance • Down-stream outputs • Focus Today: • Up-stream – Prevention • Don’t reduce scrap . . . Talk about improving yields • Decreasing Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) • Lean Manufacturing

  14. SMART Goals • Specific • Measurable • Achievable • Realistic • Time-bound

  15. Significant Environmental Aspects • CA/EP Waste • Branson Ultra-sonic Cleaner Rinse water • Solid Hazardous Waste • Water from cooling jackets • Ag/Cu Extruded Wires • Methanol

  16. Environmental Management (MAP / ISO 14001) • Regular Compliance • Community Outreach • New Product/Process/Packaging Assessments • Energy Use reduction • Water Usage avoidance • Raw Material Efficiency • Reduction of Packaging use • Reduction of Non Product Output

  17. All sites certified 100% MAP completion • Environmental Management (MAP / ISO 14001) • Regular Compliance • Community Outreach • New Product/Process/Packaging Assessments Zero non-compliances Zero incidental emissions Programs in all sites All NPPP to be assessed Focus on environmental improvements (incl. yield)

  18. 2001-2005 • Energy Use reduction • implementation best enhanced practices • CO2 emission reduction • Water Usage avoidance • implementation best practices • cumulative avoidance • Raw Material Efficiency • cumulative avoidance RM (EI improvement) • Reduction of Packaging use • cumulative avoidance • type of packaging • Reduction of Non Product Output • cumulative avoidance non-hazardous • cumulative avoidance hazardous • cumulative avoidance toxic • improvement management practices 100% implementation Corporate Goal (4%) 100% 10% 5% for franchise 10% for franchise 100% recoverably 10% 5% 5% if applicable 10% Improvement in re-use (incl energy)

  19. The 2001 dashboard

  20. Goals for Community Outreach, Water Usage avoidance and NPO • All sites develop Community Outreach Plans for 2002 / 2005 • Franchise goal for water usage avoidance - 10% • Franchise goal for NPO non-hazardous avoidance - 10% • Franchise goal for NPO hazardous avoidance - 5% • Continue progress on MPI’s, Packaging and RM reduction • (by yield improvement projects - Process Excellence!) • Continue progress in implementing best practices for water/energy

  21. 1) Non-Hazardous 2) Hazardous 3) Toxic 4) Waste Mgmt. Methods
