  2. Job Description Construction tradespeople have specialized skills, or “trades,” that set them apart from general construction laborers. Common construction trades include bricklayers, concrete masons, tilesetters, roofers, electricians, carpenters, ironworkers, glaziers and sheet metal workers.

  3. Earnings With these variables in mind, estimates of what an apprentice or trainee earns range from about $19,000 to $35,000 a year. Journeyperson tradespeople can earn $35,000 to $80,000 a year.

  4. Education There are apprenticeship programs for most construction trades. Where they are available, apprenticeships are the best way of getting into a construction trade. Programs are administered by employers, building and construction trade unions, or trade associations. Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with related classroom instruction.

Bricklayers Work out the amount of mortar and bricks needed, use a hammer and chisel or a saw to cut bricks or stones to size, stack bricks, stones, or blocks in rows to build walls, spread mortar between bricks to bond them together, and make sure walls are straight using levels and plumb lines

Concrete Masons Build forms to the right dimensions to hold wet concrete as it hardens Mix concrete to the correct consistency Pour concrete into the forms Level off the top of the concrete and smooth out the surface Apply finishes such as putting small gravel chips in the surface for a pebble finish

  8. Plasterers Boards of foam insulation to walls Mix plaster to the right consistency Apply plaster by spreading it on the wall or ceiling with a trowel or by spraying it on Produce decorative surfaces using the trowel Create and install decorative trim work, such as crown molding

  9. Glaziers Read blueprints to find the size, shape, and location of the glass they are installing Cut glass panels to size Build metal frameworks to hold glass Install glass windows, mirrors, and shower doors in homes and other buildings Install larger panels, such as storefront windows on commercial and industrial buildings

  10. Ironworkers Assemble cranes that move structural steel Lay out steel and cut, bend, and weld each piece to the correct size Assemble steel columns, beams, and girders according to blueprints Bolt pieces together and check they are level and plum Permanently bolt or weld pieces in place

  11. Painter Provide advice on color selection and paint finishes Estimate the amount of paint needed Cover floors or any furniture to protect them Prepare surfaces by washing them and filling any cracks or holes Paint walls and ceilings using paint rollers, brushes, or spray guns
