Derry Township SD • Hershey, PA • 3,600 students -1,200 in HS • 5 Buildings on one campus -10GB • 1 GB connection to IU15 • 100 MB internet connection • Started 1:1 classrooms in MS in 2008-09 • Expanded by 2011-12 • 30 1:1 HS rooms • 8th grade 1:1 in building • 9 additional MS 1:1 rooms • Financially could not sustain in 2012-13

Overview District vision: To seize the potential of digital resources to transform teaching and learning to prepare students for success in the 21st Century. • 2011-2012 BYOD pilot • Professional Development-February/March 2012 • Letter to parents/students-March 2012 • Fourth quarter BYOD pilot • 2012-2013 BYOD program • Letter to students/parents-August 2012 • Feedback from students, parents, teachers

  4. BYOD Scope • HS - full BYOD • Minimum requirements of device • wifi • web browser • approx. 65% student adoption rate • 325 district laptops distributed by depts. • 275 iPods & iPads - loan from library • MS and Elementary pilots • 4th grade lowest grade level

BYOD – Steps Taken • AUP was not changed • Mobile devices allowed • Created BYOD Guidelines- posted on CAIU's wiki • Added to Student Handbook • Letter to parents/student body - Aug • Ongoing support and training in pursuit of this initiative • Opening day activities • Marking Period 1 Goal for Teachers • In-Service Days (9/26/12 and 10/8/12) • Created ITC’s (Instructional Technology Coaches) • Starting student technology assistants (STA)

  6. ITC Roles/Responsibilities • Facilitating technology integration • Initiating interactions/consultations with teachers • Researching & sharing ideas • Faculty meetings • Twitter, social media, moodle • PLC work

ITC Roles/Responsibilities • ITC’s are mobile people in pursuit of our goals for 21st Century Skills and H.E.A.T. • ITC’s visit classrooms (invitation, stopping by, “How can I help?”) • ITC’s collaborate/communicate regularly with each other • ITC’s are NOT a “help desk” resource • Teachers are also welcome to reach out to ITC’s

BYOD Vision/Goals Administrative Team and Board • Must teach students responsible use of technology • Prepare students for their future, not our past • Team of educators driving initiative • Capitalize on the technology resources - 95% of students • Alignment with professional development goals: • 21st Century Teaching/Learning • H.E.A.T.

Logistics • Initially NO charging, but now allow if safe • iPods available to teachers/students for 3 wkloan • Students responsible for devices • no special arrangements made • Changed very little • legalized what was already happening • reduced teacher on teacher complaints • No registration of devices • 2 wireless LANs • public internet • authenticated

BYOD Challenges • Time for professional learning • Infrastructure/connectivity - iOS bandwidth • Departure from norm for teachers • Don’t know all of the answers • Teacher adoption • Students not as tech savvy as believed • started Student Technology Assistance (STA) • Saving/printing files • Typing longer blocks of text
