  2. Did you know…… • Americans waste about 33 million tons of food each year • The US spends about 1 billion dollars a year to dispose of food waste • According to the Environmental Protection Agency, food leftovers are the single-largest component of the waste stream by weight in the United States IS THERE A MORE EFFICIENT WAY?!

  3. Put your food scraps to good use! • George Stevens is hired by the Dover Board of Health to collect food waste from Dover homes and schools and brings them to a pig farm in Millis where the food scraps are fed to the pigs

  4. Benefits of the pig farmer coming to DSMS and DSHS • Trash bags are less heavy without the tonnage of the food waste • This translates into less trash pick ups that the school needs to pay for • Instead of throwing away perfectly good food, our scraps are used to feed hungry pigs! • Spreads awareness in our school and community about food waste.

  5. Last year’s attempt • Last year, the pig farmer came to the DS Regional schools to collect food waste, but the custodians stopped his daily pick-ups because students were not cooperating with the collection and just throwing their leftover food away.

  6. We can make this work - Let’s bring the pig farmer back to ds! • The biggest issue with last year’s attempt to collect food waste to feed the pigs was lack of awareness • This year, my group and I are planning on changing this, by putting up posters and making announcements in the lunchroom to let our school know what’s going on, and how they can help • By painting the pig slop buckets, increasing signage in the cafeteria and possibly creating competitions and prizes, we can feed the pigs, reduce our food waste AND have fun!!
