  1. Directions: Check your schedule. Make sure it says, “English III / Brister / 205” on it. Pick up a Student Information Sheet from Mrs. Brister. Find your assigned seat from the name tags on the desks. If you cannot find your name, see Mrs. Brister and she will help you. Silently work on the Student Information Sheet. When done, silently wait for further directions.

  9. Classroom Rules 1.) Follow all directions and procedures the first time they are given.

  10. Classroom Rules 2.) Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak unless you are doing group work.

  11. Classroom Rules 3.) Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise.

  12. Classroom Rules 4.) Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

  13. Classroom Rules 5.) Keep it positive: no cursing or teasing.

  14. Also follow school rules • No electronics out without permission • No eating or drinking • Follow the dress code • Avoid being tardy

Consequences Minor offenses – You get four chances: • Warning • Offense documented • Parent/guardian phone call home • Removal from the classroom and a referral Includes: talking out of turn, not following classroom procedures, getting out of your seat without permission, rude behavior, having an electronic device out during class, or loud yelling or inappropriate noises. • May call home if a student gets to chance number two several times in a row during a week

  16. Consequences • Major offense – immediate removal from class and a referral • Includes: fighting, cussing out the teacher or other students, throwing objects, verbal altercations, or failure to act appropriately when being corrected for a minor offense by the teacher.   

  17. Materials • 200 page Composition Notebook • Loose-leaf paper to place in the sections of your notebook • Pens, pencils, highlighters

  20. Hall Passes • Emergencies only • Only once a week – this will be recorded! • DO NOT INTERUPT A LECTURE OR DIRECTIONS • If we are on restricted movement or lockdown, the answer will always be “no,” so plan accordingly.

  21. Cheating • You will receive a “0” if you are caught cheating • Be very, very careful about plagiarism when you are writing your research paper

  22. Homework • All: Signed syllabus due next Friday • All: Composition notebook due next Friday

  23. Procedures • They allow the classroom to run more smoothly, which allows you to become more successful.

  24. Coming to attention When you see Mrs. Brister waving her hand or see her hand up: • Stop talking • Listen to what Mrs. Brister says • Follow Mrs. Brister’s directions

  25. Entering the classroom • Quiet down / slow down: don’t run or yell when coming in the classroom • Put away things that shouldn’t be out: no electronics, food, drinks, hats, hoods, etc. • Prepare for class: turn in homework, sharpen pencils, get what you need for class • Sit down: Find your seat, don’t wander around the room • Quiet down & get started: Zip your lips and start on your warm up

Leaving the classroom • Finish up your work / work bell to bell: Don’t stop working just because it’s the end of the block • Listen for final directions: Keep it quiet so you can hear any last minute instructions from Mrs. Brister • The bell does not dismiss you; Mrs. Brister does • Turn in any work before you leave • Keep it quiet / keep it calm

  27. If you forgot your materials: • Don’t bug Mrs. Brister because you were not responsible • Instead, go to cart and pick up what you need – within reason. • Continue following the coming to class procedures by going to your seat and starting on your warm up

  28. If you need to turn in something: • Before the bell rings, turn in your homework in the appropriate basket on the back table • Continue following the coming to class procedures by going to your seat and start on your warm up

  29. If you were absent: • It is your responsibility to get with Mrs. Brister and pick up your make-up work. • You get ONE copy, so don’t lose what you are given. • It is also your responsibility to get with another student and make up any missing Daybook pages.

  30. What to do during Direct Instruction • Listen attentively / do not talk • Raise your hand if you need to ask a question • Follow any directions

  31. What to do during Cooperative Work • Follow Mrs. Brister’s directions • Move to your groups quickly and quietly • Speak softly – do not yell; your voices should be no louder than the music playing • Watch for Mrs. Brister’s coming to attention signal

  32. What to do during Independent Work • Keep it silent • Work on the work given to you by Mrs. Brister • If you finish early, find something to do quietly.

  33. What to do during Discussions • Follow directions. • Only speak when it is your turn. • Be respectful of other people’s comments

  34. What if I finish my early work? • Work on something from another class • Raise your hand and ask to get a book • Put your head down • Do not start bothering other people

  35. Practice – Cooperative Work Directions: • Mrs. Brister will give each of you a Post-It note. • Turn to the people around you and generate ideas about the Essential Question. • Please use low voices to discuss you answers. • When done, stick your Post-It note on the paper at the front and sit back down.

  36. Ticket Out the Door • List one classroom rule. • What will Mrs. Brister do to get your attention? What should you do when this happens? • What is the procedure for when you are absent? • Where do you turn in your homework?
