  3. Referencing is IMPORTANT • If an idea from another author is adopted, the source must be referenced, generally including page number/s; the mere fact that the author’s exact words are not used does not reduce the need for a reference.

  4. Referencing • HARVARD – must include specific page if: • (1) Referring to a specific page or pages, or • (2) Using a direct quotation. • Example: Consistent with its totalizing inclinations, structuralism presupposes not only the priority of structure over practice but also the ‘absolute predominance of the whole over the parts’ (Ollman 1976: 266). • CHICAGO – reference in main body differs from bibliography format • Main body : author’s first name, then surname • Example: Sut Jhally, ‘Advertising at the Edge of the Apocalypse’ in R. Andersen & L. Strate (eds.), Critical Studies in Media, Oxford, Oxford University Press 1995. Ch. 1 pp. 27 – 39. • Bibliography: author’s surname, then first name • Example: Jhally, Sut, ‘Advertising at the Edge of the Apocalypse’ in R. Andersen & L. Strate (eds.), Critical Studies in Media, Oxford, Oxford University Press 1995. Ch. 1 pp. 27 – 39.

Xhasn’t has not • Avoid colloquial phrases, such as these days. • Semicolon • If you are unsure if you should use a semicolon, rewrite the sentence to avoid using one. • The possessive apostrophe • A basic rule when the noun ends in ‘s’ or ‘z’ is to follow whichever spoken form is judged better…The boss’s desk or the boss’ desk? Anthony Downs’s theory or Anothony Downs’ theory? Goebbels's principles or Goebbels’ principles?
