Key Considerations in the Resolution of Grievances • The following slides provide grievance statistics for 2016-2017 (data as of March 31, 2017) • The following key considerations are promoted in any grievance process: • Early identification • Communication (including mediation) • Resolution at the lowest level possible Conflict is a natural occurrence when people work together and it has the potential to be a positive force which can promote new ideas, strengthen personal relationships, stimulate individual growth and facilitate more effective solutions.

  3. Departmental Overview Legend: Branches with the most grievances as of March 31, 2017 *Active employees (Indeterminate, Term, Seasonal and those on sick leave)

Grievances by Branch • In 2016-2017, there were 225 active grievances compared to 240 in 2015-2016. • MSC, representing 22.39% of the total workforce, has the most number of grievances; representing 48.44% of all departmental grievances. • Noteworthy however, is that pay-related grievances (related to Phoenix issues) represent 80.7% of all MSC grievances (88 cases out of a total of 109).

  5. Grievances by Type • Excluding Pay-related grievances (156), the next types of most filed grievances by topic are: • Job content: 8 • Overtime: 6 • Salary: 5 • Duty to Accommodate: 5

Grievances Related to Pay (Phoenix) as of March 31, 2017 Total: 156 • MSC has the most Phoenix-related grievances with 88 cases (56.41%) out of 156. • 36 cases (23%) of all Pay-related grievances submissions were addressed and resolved. • 120 cases (77%) of Pay-related grievances remained active as of March 31, 2017.
