  1. Demonstration of OGC Web Mapping Services Doug Nebert FGDC/GSDI Secretariat

  2. Demonstration Overview • Infrastructure requirements • Web Mapping Service elements • Capabilities • Future possibilities

  3. Principles Today’s demo illustrates the service of maps from multiple servers to a single web browser window where data can be viewed together. Such multi-server interfaces can be implemented within an organization, across multiple agencies, or to a full public audience.

  4. OGC Web Mapping Services • This demonstration shows only the use of the OGC Web Mapping Service Specification 1.0 – a simple map service • Several OGC members including ESRI, MapInfo, AutoDesk, and Intergraph provide WMS-compliant solutions for map service that have additional service capabilities • Open-source software also exists for experimentation and small-scale service

  5. OGC Web Map Specification • getCapabilities – retrieves the map server information including layer names, styles, and projections supported • getMap – requests a picture of a certain size and format to the client (JPEG, GIF, PNG) • getFeatureInfo – allows query of feature behind map server and returns attributes to client

  7. Each institution maintains control of its data • This is a visualization tool that delivers map pictures not data • There are also mechanisms to support search (Clearinghouse catalog) and download or direct data access, but these are not being demonstrated • Need a server on the Internet, other servers can be used (USGS Mitch servers)

  8. Data and Service Standards These systems work because of the application of appropriate standards for: • Metadata • Catalog Service (Clearinghouse Search) • OpenGIS Web Mapping Service

  9. Mapping from Multiple Servers using OGC WMS This slide shows raster and vector data from USGS, FGDC, and UNITEC

  10. More detail from the same servers, and metadata, too! More detail

  12. Discussion • Central America is ready to put together a pilot project. We can build on Mitch Clearinghouse project and PROCIG to have an Internet mapping project among 7 countries. • Map service provides pictures of data from servers on the Internet. Data and server operators are needed. • Different compliant map services can be used depending on service requirements. Choice among OGC-compliant map server products can be made.
