  4. Benefits of Statistics • Summarize and present data in a straightforward and compelling manner • Identify differences/impact so we can take action • Document relationships so we can take action

  5. Statistical Skills Required • Ability to frame questions so that data can provide answers • Knowledge to select the right statistical procedures to answer the questions • Awareness of how statistical techniques work on a conceptual level Wisconsin summit for data-informed leadership

  6. Action Research Cycle: Classroom Wisconsin summit for data-informed leadership

  7. Action Research Cycle: Classroom – Focus Wisconsin summit for data-informed leadership

  8. Question Formulation Session Participants: Take a few moments and write 3 to 5 questions you’d like answered, and if answered and used to support decision making, would likely: • Improve student learning • Improve student behavior • Enhance instructional delivery • Help your school meet stated goals Wisconsin summit for data-informed leadership

  9. Key Areas of Statistical Application • Summarize/present data • Identify differences • Identify relationships • Can you match each of your questions to one of these areas?

  10. Statistical Tools • For Google Sheets: • XLMiner Analysis ToolPack (Install from Add-Ons in Google Sheet menu bar) For Excel: • File->Options->Add-Ins->Analysis ToolPak • www.excel-easy.com Examples: • PracticeProblems • WorksExamplesGOOGLESHEETS *Most data can be presented in a spreadsheet Wisconsin summit for data-informed leadership

  11. Summarize/Present Data • Descriptive Statistics • Histograms • Scatter Plots

  12. Differences/Impact • Levels of variability in data: • F-test • Differences between two or more groups: • t-test, ANOVA • Differences in pre- and post-measurements to determine change or impact: • Matched sample t-test

  13. Identify Relationships • Strength of relationship • Direction of relationship • NOT causality • Correlation analysis

  14. Formulate a Plan… • While on vacation in Aruba, you overhear a poolside discussion about a new virtual online writing tutor program that focuses on preparing high school students to meet the challenges of college level writing. Since your school is working toward producing college-ready graduates with strong writing skills, you put down your pina colada and take a few notes. Three weeks later, when your tan has begun to fade, you pitch the purchase of online access to the writing tutor for your high school at the district office. Your superintendent asks you to provide convincing evidence to take to the budget committee to support your request. What do you do? Wisconsin summit for data-informed leadership
