Introduction to BENE08fifth & last BENE workshop Tuesday Dec 2-3 CERN 60-6-002 meeting focusing on the BENE Final Report to be published as a CERN Yellow Report early in 2009 in addition to the 5th ordinary Yearly Report as input to the review body for accelerator neutrino programs that CERN Council will be setting up early next year. Proposal for its content Section 0 Introduction and executive summary Section 1 Achievements during the lifetime of BENE Section 2 Context and objectives for the coming years (NEu2012) largely, write-ups of the presentations to BENE08 editorial board composed of BENE SG and other speakers today & tomorrow will start work immediately after workshop V.Palladino Introduction to BENE08

Four years of BENE in a nutshellas presented to CARE07 CARE-Report-04-034-BENE.doc CARE-Report-05-021-BENE.doc • 2004 BENE established on the EU scene • MMW workshop May 2004: the MMW frontier Villars SPSC meeting Sep 04, where we cashed renewed attention to a Eu ν program (R&D) emergenceofa ν “construction window” !!!!!!!!!!!   4. 2006 BENE proved a driving force of the International Scoping Study • with US+Japan+India and more • published a comprehensive Midterm Scientific Report • CERN Yellow 2006-005 22 May 2006 • scored in July a “formal” CERN Council recognition of • its physics case, its R&D recommendations • started an intense period of preparation of FP7 proposals • 2007 BENE Design Study Euro-ν approved in August • in a natural international context • the International Design Stud(ies) ... JPARC, FNAL • Neutrino Factory IDS CERN Mar 07, next Jan 08 • NuFact08 August, NNN08 Octoberboth in Japan this year • BENE’s international collaborations • setting up to start Euro-ν • continuing preparation of FP7 proposals • CARE-Next NA, TA, JRAs 2008 Fifth year will be summarized tonight V.Palladino Introduction to BENE08
