  1. CloudEthernet Forum Overview

  2. The CloudEthernet Forum is an industry forum that brings together relevant stakeholders to work towards maximizing the use of Ethernet to meet the evolving needs of cloud service users over the coming decade

  3. Cloud Services Market Growth • Enterprises and consumers around the globe need increasing amounts of on-demand cloud compute and storage capacity • Cloud service providers need to minimize complexity of scaling and rapid redistribution of VMs and storage to meet performance, cost and regulation compliance objectives

  4. Cloud Services Scaling Challenges • Ethernet is the fundamental networking technology used in the backplane, racks, between racks and site interconnects BUT • Current layer 2 technology approaches do not yet effectively support increasingly large and geographically dispersed VM and storage environments • Orchestration layer to support very large VM environments dependent on increasingly complex L2/L3 interactions

  5. Stakeholders in Scaling Cloud Services • A range of companies need to work together effectively to address technological issues of scaling cloud service infrastructures • Data Center Providers • WAN Service Providers • System Integrators • Network Equipment Manufacturers • Cloud Service Providers • Cloud Infrastructure Providers

  6. CloudEthernet Forum – target issues To recap the issues we were set up to solve: • Enabling Cloud Service providers to offer cost effective solutions, quickly • Faster time to market • Flexible ability to address customer’s changing needs • Taking Ethernet to a whole new level globally • Expanding the market for Ethernet services • Utilising existing networking capabilities • Greater end-to-end integration across cloud & network solutions Meeting the needs of cloud service users through effective use of Ethernet networking

  7. CloudEthernet Forum – market environment New industry solutions are needed for a rapidly evolving environment: SaaS • Google Apps, SalesForce, SuccessFactors, Office 365 PaaS/IaaS • AWS, Azure, Google, … Private clouds • BFSI, System Integrators, Rackspace, Equinix, Ever-increasing demand for compute and storage resources Location, location, location! • Enhance user experience with fast response times • Reduce costs – optimize resources, power and space

  8. CloudEthernetForum – problems faced today Users face a number of problems today: • Performance degraded with single hub architectures • Laws violated due to inadvertent reroutes • Cloud infrastructure providers ask customers to cobble together their own global mirroring solutions • Customers facing competing approaches to cloud infrastructure

  9. Standardize To Achieve Promise of Cloud…… Simplification • Reduce load on higher order protocols – e.g. VXLAN, NVGRE, STT, even SDN • Uncouple complex and inflexible relationship between L2 and L3 • Consolidate the multitude of storage protocols What this means • Less complex equipment, fewer management layers, easier routing configuration and same infrastructure for compute & storage • Flexible and scalable infrastructure allowing cloud resources to be delivered where needed

  10. Forum Activities • Technical • Identify required technical work • Develop specifications and implementation agreements • Marketing • Promote technical solutions developed by the Forum • Operations • Identify required business processes • Develop recommended best practices
