Development of ASIC Electronics for ILC Forward-Calorimeter and Diamond Detectors

This project focuses on the development of ASIC electronics for the ILC Forward-Calorimeter and Diamond Detectors. Two different approaches are being taken: project-driven integration of an ESR into the electronics development for the international detector project, and application-driven development of cutting-edge diamond detectors. The project plan includes activities such as VLSI design, simulations, layout, analog front-end, data conversion, digital readout, and prototype ASIC testing.

  1. MC-PadWP 11Front-End ElectronicsDevelopment of ASIC Electronics for the ILC Forward-Calorimeter and Diamond Detectors1 ESR at AGH1 ER at GSIEvatronix as industrial partner MC-Pad Kick-Off Meeting, CERN, Geneva, Jan. 13-14 2009, C.J. Schmidt and M. Idzik

  2. Two different approaches • Project driven: Very active VLSI ASIC development group integrates an ESR into a challenging electronics development for an international detector project: • AGH has taken over the readout electronics development for the ILC LumiCal Forward Calorimeter • Application driven: Cutting edge diamond detector application development seeks ER for a generation transfer of knowledge in high speed microwave analogue ASIC electronics from highly specialized expert to step down soon. • Proceed with the PADI diamond detector pixel readout multi channel ASIC development by Mircea Ciobanu who will retire at the end of 2009.

  3. Project Plan

  4. ILC Luminosity Detector, c.f. WP6, DESY LumiCal

  5. LumiCal architecture Si/W sandwich calorimeter, 2 half barrels, each 30 layers • Signal: from 2 fC – 10 000 fC • Occupancy: up to ~20% • Sensors: Cdet10-100 pF • Inter bunch time ~ 350 ns Each layer consists of 0.35cm thick tungsten and 300µm thick Si sensor Single detector layer 24 azimuthal sectors, each sector with ~64 radial pads

  6. LumiCal Readout System

  7. Prospective ESR activities (recruitment in progress)‏ • VLSI design, simulations, layout • Analog Front-end • Data conversion • Digital readout • Prototype ASIC testing • FPGA digital readout Precise weighting of activities will heavily depend upon personal preferences, experience and capability of the ESR

  8. CVD Diamond Detector Material Diamond, a large bandgap semiconductor  unsurpassed in signal speed (28 ps time res. shown)  enormous radiation hardness Poly – CVDD: size up to 4"Ø d = 12µm–2mm CCE ≈ 50% SC-CVDD: "standard": CCE = 100% d =300-500µm; size=5x5mm2, ”advanced/special”: d =40-500µm; size=10x10mm2 Courtesy of Element Six (UK) Ltd. (Group De Beers) Diamond expert at GSI: Eleni Berdermann/Detectorlab.

  9. Single Crystal- CVD Diamond Detectors for Spectroscopy and Timing pixelized detector will allow GHz individual particle detection including essential timing information: start, veto and interaction t0 determination

  10. Summary for ER engagement on WP11 at GSI • Deep fundamental technological research with important implications to detector system performance! • pixelized diamond detectors for start and t0 (dt < 30ps) • further broad applications with RPC TOF detectors • Pick-up and expand on Mircea Ciobanu´s first PADI 4 channel prototype before he leaves to Rumania for his pension. (Mircea is GSI´s in house Visiting Scientist) • Close interaction with a powerful analogue ASIC development group essential for persistance of this work and technology transfer. MC-Pad is a well matched vehicle!
