What we hope to accomplish – The Big Picture • Research Experience for Undergraduates • You will participate in meaningful research • You will work independently • You will work as part of a team • You will learn something new • You will experience: • What it is like to do academic research in CFD for Engineering problems • What it is like to do academic research at University of Hawai‘i • We will advance our department research • We will experience what it is like to have you on our team • We hope to have published research • We strive for maximum discovery with minimum frustration!

Learning opportunities; Tools you will need • To participate in research at this level, you need expertise/knowledge on three levels • Theory of fluids • Numerical concepts, use of numerical code • High performance computing issues for large problems • We will provide sessions to review/augment your basic knowledge in all these areas over the next two weeks • You will also begin your projects with your mentors, and apply what you learn.

Important Dates/Events • June 12-13, 2012 – Joint Hawai‘i-Korea Workshop on Engineering of Coastal Structures for Tsunami and Coastal Storm Surge Hazards • Mandatory for Matt, Stephanie, Jordan, and Adam • Others will decide with mentor if they will attend • If they attend, let Dr. Riggs know, so he can register them. • Time: 1:30 pm – 6:30 pm. Students are expected to work on their research projects in the am.

Important Dates/Events (con’t) • Friday, June 15, 2012 • Visit to Pacific Tsunami Warning Center • Mandatory for all students • Sunday, June 3, 2012 • Picnic at Fort DeRussy Beach Park • Not Mandatory, but lots of fun • Every Friday except June 15 • Brown bag lunch in Holmes 287 • Bring lunch and a drink • If I am in town, you get cookies or dessert, if not, you get me on conference call or skype. (I’ll still be eating cookies.) • Be prepared to give a 5 minute summary of how it’s going with your work and discuss everyone else’s work • Very informal – intended to help and avoid time-wasting blocks. Also to leverage each other’s knowledge. • Mandatory for all students.
