  2. GAPSS Analysis Revisions • Revised School Keys • No Certified Staff Survey • New classroom observation process • Revised interview process • More structured and detailed review of “other data” • Three days two days • Process tweaks 2

  3. Revised School Keys • New Strand Names • Curriculum Planning • Assessment • Instruction • Planning and Organization • Family and Community Engagement • Professional Learning • Leadership • School Culture 3

  4. Simplified Hierarchy • Old • Strands • Standards • Indicators or Descriptors (Scored) • New • Strands • Standards (Scored) 4

  6. Changes to Rubric Performance Levels Old Performance Levels Not Addressed Emergent Operational Fully Operational New Performance Levels Exemplary Operational Emerging Not Evident 6

  7. Certified Staff Survey • The Certified Staff Survey (CSS) is no longer included in the GAPSS process. • The GAPSS team will review perception data collected from TKES surveys when available.

  8. Observation Notes • If a classroom is empty or is not the subject/teacher on your schedule, make a note and notify the team leader as soon as possible. Do not reschedule on your own. • Do not improvise with your schedule; do not observe any classes that are not on your schedule. For example, you may notice that you are next door to a classroom that you are scheduled to observe later; do not go ahead and observe “while you are in the area.”

  9. GAPSS Classroom Instruction Observation Form • No longer scored observed/not observed; now rated 0, 1, 2, or 3 • Greater emphasis on student behavior • Linked to TKES • Possible performance indicators • Co-teaching rated at top of form • No “additional” observation form 9

  10. New Rating Scale for Classroom Observations 10

  11. Scoring

  12. Emphasis on Student Behavior

  13. Strand-Standard Indicators Linked to TKES

  14. Possible Performance Indicators • Indicators are examples; all examples are not listed, and all examples will not usually be present--use your professional judgment to score.

  15. Observation Form: Co-Teaching • Mark block at top of form if observation is in a co-taught setting, and then • circle co-teaching model observed; • circle rating effectiveness level of co-teaching strategies. 15

  16. Classroom Observation Form—Co-Teaching Information

  17. Extended Learning Time Note the answers to the following questions: • What were the students doing? Were they engaged? • What was the teacher doing? • Were the interventions/activities appropriate and effective? (Share these data during team discussion on day 2)

  18. Focus Group Interviews • Interviews/focus groups now include: > Principal > Leadership Team > Teachers (randomly chosen) > Students > Parents • Questions broader (at the strand level) with “listen-fors”

  19. Interview Notes • Decide who will ask and who will script—if interviewing with permanent GAPSS team member, let him/her ask the questions. • The interviewer’s role is now more as a facilitator. Try to get everyone to participate and not to let 1-2 dominate. • Do not ask interviewees to give their names-may ask teachers their subject area/grade level • Pace yourself with checkpoints at half and ¾ of the way through. • Do not provide advice, correctives, or suggestions. Record interviewees’ responses “as is.”

  20. Sample Interview Questions(Teacher Focus Group)

  21. Other Data • Detailed review of other data, e.g., lesson plans, CCRPI, TKES, sample units of study, school improvement plan • Regional SIS data specialist will assist with compiling and reviewing specified “other data”

  22. Norms • Anonymity and confidentiality are the hallmarks of the GAPSS process. • Put cell phones on vibrate. • Be on time for observations and interviews; follow the observation schedule closely (to the minute). You will need a watch or cell phone. • Use the time when you are not scheduled for an observation or interview to review “other data” in the team room. • During the School Keys discussion, all must be present and focused on this task. • Do not “collect your own data” by informally talking with teachers, staff members, etc. to gain information.

  23. Methodology to Determine GAPSS Score Each school will receive an overall score based on scoring the School Keys rubric and the school’s performance on the CCRPI.

  24. Summary Report • Paperless • All documents included on CD-ROMS > One for school > One for system • Includes Commendations and Target Areas for Improvement • Presented at post-GAPSS conference no later than two weeks after the review
