  1. Arc de Triomphe By: Jessica Jimenez Algebra II

  2. Background • Extra Credit: Include other architectural wonders from the same place. • Took two long years JUST to lay the foundation. • It was commissioned in 1806 after the victory at Austerlitz by Emperor Napoleon I. • In 1810 when Napoleon entered Paris from the west with his bride, Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria, he had a wooden mock-up of the completed arch constructed. • It was not until the reign of King Louis-Philippe, in 1833 to1836. • It displayed the French youth nude, they were shown to be against bearded German warriors. • This soon set the tone for public monuments with nationalistic messages, right up until WorldWar I. Charles Godefroy– The flight through the Arc de Triomphe, on 7 August 1919

  3. Four Main Sculptures On The Arc: Le Départ de 1792 (or La Marseillaise) La Marseillaise, by François Rude Le Triomphe de 1810 La Résistance de 1814 The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier commemorates the dead of the two world wars. The Arc de Triomphe seen in the early 1900s, when the horse & carriage were king and the Champs-Elysées was still a grassy expanse.

  4. Notre-Dame de Paris (Our lady of Paris) Montparnasse Tower Eiffel Tower The Louvre Pantheon

  5. Purpose The Monument mains purpose was to bring peace to France. The sculpture representing Peace is now interpreted as commemorating the Peace of 1815, which was not the original intention.

  6. Chief Architects and math that was used by them.. The structure was designed by Jean François Thérèse Chalgrin (1739-1811), completed in 1833 and inaugurated in 1836 by the French king, Louis-Philippe An “arc” falls under the category of geometry meaning that knowing the basic concept of geometry was a crucial pint for building this architecture.

  7. Where there any specific contributions to the advancements of civilization, architecture or engineering? • Yes, the Arc de Triomphe brought upon much change to the the architectural mind. Like I mentioned before the Arc had the youth portrayed nude upon it to show opposition toward German warriors. That soon set the tone for public monuments with nationalistic messages.

  8. Was this architecture ahead of its time?Is this architecture still in existence today? • No the architecture was not ahead of its time, because the art being used to make this architecture was Huyot and Goust, which was normally used among the architects. But, it was the second largest triumphal arch in the world! Something else that made it unique were the sculptures it showcased, that not many structures had been see before, it made the arc different but not ahead of it’s time. • Of course the Arc de Triomphe still stands tall and proud in Paris, France!!

  9. Great Architecture? Overrated • I believe that the Arc de Triomphe was a spectacular architecture. Not, only because it had veautiful structures all around it and it was 162 ft tall and in FRANCE, but for its significance it, the monument of peace.
