  4. Why was it Built?? • Built to honor the imperial armies • Promised to Napoleons troops after Battle of Austerlitz in 1805 • Commissioned by Napoleon

  5. Very Important Facts • Allied armies paraded through in 1919 • Victor Hugo buried under it • Example of neoclassical style of the late 1700s early 1800s

  6. Even more Important Facts • 164 feet high • 148 feet wide • Liberation of Paris, De Gaulle leads a crowd through the arch

  7. Location • It stands at the western end of Champs Elysees • 12 avenues branch from the center • There is a pedestrian passage beneath the street that leads to the base of the arch

  8. Style and Description • Has a viewing platform • Has 30 shields that have the name of each victorious battle Napoleon fought • The avenues that branch off from it are named after military leaders

  9. Why is it famous?? • It is the largest arch in the world • The Unknown Soldier lies underneath • It has the names of famous generals on it
