  3. APPROACH Any text is a combination of language levels and can be looked at or discussed from any of these perspectives e.g. a text can be analysed lexically, grammatically, phonologically etc. P A F C

  6. Course Overview Spoken or Written? We all enjoy a visit to the hairdressers or having a beauty treatment. Here is your opportunity to sample a range of Salon services carried out by our trainees at a very special rate. Brampton Hairdressing Salon Do you or your friends fancy a new haircut or colour, or maybe just a simple wash & blow -dry? Opening times: Monday to Friday 9.30am – 3.00pmAll services are carried out by Hairdressing Trainees, supervised by a qualified Hairdressing Tutor. PURPOSE … FORM … AUDIENCE … CONTEXT … How is this different from the previous text?

  7. PAPER 1 – 2 hours 30 mins. Section A Analysis of a single written text (usually) – using the language levels of lexis, semantics and sentence structures Section B Writing about a topical issue linked to language use e.g. Write an article for a broadsheet newspaper giving your views on this topic. (500 words) Section C A comparison of two texts – one spoken, one written – comparing language features and contexts.

  8. Paper 2 – 2 hours 30 minutes Section A Child Language Acquisition – Analyse how children (aged 0 - 7) acquire language, looking at phonological development, grammar and meaning. Section B Language in the media – exploring different language contexts e.g. language and power, language and gender, language and technology Section C Language Change – comparing two texts, written at different time periods from 1600s to present day. ALL DATA IS UNSEEN

  9. Paper 3 – Independent Language Study You will carry out a data investigation project on a language topic of your choice. Findings will also be presented in the form of an academic poster.

  10. GET TO GRIPS WITH GRAMMAR • Sort the cards into colours • Each colour represents a word class – what are they? Create the following: • A simple sentence • A compound sentence • A complex sentence • A noun phrase • An active sentence • A passive sentence COMPETITION: Create the longest sentence that makes sense.

  11. Holiday Work • Learn the language levels – the definitions and some of the typical features. The ‘Glossary of Terms’ is labelled ‘AQA’ Glossary. We are following the OCR course but the terms are still applicable/appropriate • Add to your grammar knowledge • Further reading will be required. Choose one article from those on the website. Write a summary of the main points. Bring to week 1 of year 12. • Take a copy of the text excerpts (Given out on June 26th). Decide where they might be found. PFAC each one as far as you can.
