  2. The Units of study: AQA specification B AS: • Unit 1: Introduction to the Study of Language • Unit 2: Language and Social Contexts • Unit 3: Original Writing A2: • Unit 4: Investigating Language • Unit 5: Editorial Writing • Unit 6: Language Development

  3. Aims and Assessment objectives See Starter Pack pages 9 and 10. Notice : • AO1, AO2 and AO4 are assessed at both AS and A level • How AO3i and AO5i differ from AO3ii and AO5ii: progression.

  4. The Terminology • Comparing/ categorising texts (Unit 1): can involve any text at all. Don’t simply categorise genres: investigate subtle differences – stylistic/ micro-audience/ single or combined purposes. • Social contexts (Unit 2): focus changes every two years. E.g., language and gender, language and power, language and ICT…

  5. …more terms • Original Writing (Unit 3): two pieces of original work, aimed at a specific audience, purpose and form. Maximum 3,000 words. Students also produce a linguistic commentary on their own writing and the process of drafting. Drafts must be included.

  6. …and • Language Investigation (Unit 4): aka ‘Project’. Students collect their own data and use them to investigate any aspect of language, as in a research project. E.g., ‘The Language of Gravestones’, ‘Taboo Language use in the college canteen’, ‘Gendered language in Mills and Boon’.

  7. …and • Editorial writing (Unit 5): aka Case Study/ Desk Study. Pre-released packs of material on particular themes have to be rewritten (‘re-cast’) in a new form, for a new audience and a new purpose. E.g., pack on multiple sclerosis: create an audio tape to inform and reassure sufferers and their relatives; pack on different sports: create cards for cereal packets, promoting sport. Other tasks: CDRom/ website/ display boards/ speech scripts/ radio scripts/ programmes…

  8. …and finally • Synoptic (Unit 6: Language Development): a drawing together of all the skills and knowledge accrued on the course. Unit 6 carries 20% of the total marks on AQA spec B. Includes language acquisition and language change.

  9. Spoken Language • Rarely addressed in pre-16 courses. • Adopt an investigative approach – use data from natural conversation and scripted conversation as a means of investigating real features of natural speech. • Speech in different contexts and for different purposes. • Relevant to AS/A2 English Language and Literature. • See pack.

  10. Further development • Mind-map some teaching strategies -make them enjoyable and active! - to develop students’ skills in investigating texts • Plan a lesson for Unit 1: use the EH template and remember that AS students are only a few weeks beyond GCSE, but are also only a term away from their exam. • Research Editorial Writing (Unit 5) tasks set in the past and think of ways of developing students’ skills to cope with them • IF YOU ARE IN AN 11-18 SCHOOL, ASK FOR POST 16 ENHANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES!
