Education programme: our objectives • Raise the ambition for nursing and midwifery, for the benefit of people, families and communities • Maximise the quality and safety of nursing and midwifery education and training • Ensure that regulation is fit for purpose, and not a barrier to individual and service development

  3. Structure of the new standards

  4. Education and training standards These standards apply to all parts of the register and all routes to registration. They provide the means to assure us that the student can meet the relevant standards of proficiency by undertaking an approved programme

Essential considerations • Need for effective partnerships between AEIs and practice learning partners • Actively involve inter disciplinary colleagues • Understand and introduce new roles • What supervision and assessment model will work in your practice learning environments? • Who will be your supervisors and assessors? • How will they be prepared for their role?

Consultation findings • Wide support for the review and for change • Barriers- finance, access, student support (94% orgs / 91% individuals agreed) • Use different approaches for individual circumstances (85% orgs / 90% individuals agreed) • Programmes: agreement on ‘mixed cohort’ (69% orgs / 76% individuals) more flexibility and ‘tailoring’ • ToC: yes for revalidation & overseas but not for FtP • Self declaration: ‘split’ and concerns for FtP

  19. Our new RtP standards • Provide a 3 month extension for those who can fulfil revalidation but fall short of practice hours • Offer a registration test as an alternative to completion of an RtP programme • Include new Standards for RtP programmes (approvals can commence from May 2019)

  20. New RtP standards timeline: • Reviewed between 2016-18 • Approved by NMC Council 27 March 2019 • Publication of new standards May 2019 • Planned transitional period with communication and support • Current RtP standards to be withdrawn from Sept 2020

  21. SPQ and SCPHN • We commissioned an independent evaluation of our current standards (Blake Stephenson) • The evaluation completed in early 2019 • Paper to Council Seminar in April • Engagement with nurses, midwives, SCPHN and SPQs in early Summer
