  1. Patching Your SharePoint Server Nicole Bird June 24, 2009

  2. What version are you at now? • Central Administration > Operations > Servers in Farm • Check this post for version / patch relationship: http://www.sharepointdevwiki.com/display/SharePointAdministrationWiki/SharePoint+Versions (shows up to June Cumulative as of 7/09)

  3. Resources • Technet Update Resource Center for SPPT http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sharepointserver/bb735839.aspx Step 1 - links for WSS and MOSS have different text, but they link to the same video. Produced 3/08 but still relevant. Step 2 - separate sites for WSS and MOSS. Step 3 - Remember, MOSS servers run on WSS, so you have to install WSS patch first, the MOSS patch. We do not install Language Packs, so I can’t speak to that. I do know they have to be installed after updates, and again must install WSS then MOSS.

  4. Resources (cont) • MS ‘owners’ of Office (not just SharePoint) updates: http://blogs.technet.com/office_sustained_engineering/default.aspx • In June, there was an Excel patch that affected Excel Services in MOSS.

  5. SP2 Notes • Caused MOSS licenses to revert to trial version! • HOTFIX IS NOW OUT: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971620 • Manual fix: CA > Ops > Convert License Type > Enter the Product Key • Issue: Failed to execute request because the App-Domain could not be created. FIX: wssFarmService account applied at WSS folder level and down to web.config • SP 2 was released just before April Cumulative Update: http://blogs.technet.com/office_sustained_engineering/archive/2009/05/01/faq-concerning-cumulative-updates-for-april-2009-and-the-service-pack-2-for-the-2007-microsoft-office-system-and-microsoft-office-servers.aspx

  6. What if I have errors? • Start here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954713/ • Try here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Search/en-US/ • Stay informed: subscribe to any RSS feeds where you find good help!

  7. Other Tips • First thing after each update, rename the update log file. I just append the patch &/or date to it. • Bonus tip: Create a desktop shortcut to the 12 hive folder Target = C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\LOGS • and a link for CMD to open the 12 hive directory. http://itfootprint.wordpress.com/2007/09/18/sharepoint-12-hive-in-one-click/

  8. Have you seen this? We use Office 2007 at Roanoke County. When I was in a Checked Out, edit mode version of a document from a WSS library I would periodically try to Save and it would be in Read Only mode.
