The leading causes of noncommunicable diseases (NCD) deaths in 2016 were: • cardiovascular diseases (17.9 million deaths, or 44% of all NCD deaths), • cancers (9.0 million, or 22% of all NCD deaths), • respiratory diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (3.8 million of 9% of all NCD deaths) • Diabetes caused 1.6 million deaths. • The burden of these diseases is rising disproportionately among lower income countries and populations. • In 2016, over three quarters of NCD deaths -- 31.5 million -- occurred in low- and middle-income countries with about 46% of deaths occurring before the age of 70 in these countries.

  10. Type 1 diabetes – auto-immune condition in which the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. We do not know what causes this auto-immune reaction. Type 1 diabetes is not linked to modifiable lifestyle factors. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented • Type 2 diabetes - a progressive condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin and/or gradually loses the capacity to produce enough insulin in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is associated with modifiable lifestyle risk factors. Type 2 diabetes also has strong genetic and family related risk factors • Gestational diabetes - occurs during pregnancy. Most women will no longer have diabetes after the baby is born Types of Diabetes
