  6. www.sentrain.net Understanding section • The objectives of this section are to : • To raise awareness of the prevalence of the disability • To distinguish fact from fiction in relation to the condition • To raise awareness of the range of difficulties children with this need may experience • To raise awareness of the impact of these difficulties on curriculum access and social inclusion

  7. www.sentrain.net Assessment section • The objectives of this section are to : • To gain knowledge of the rationale behind the assessment of skills in an educational context • To show how informal assessment can be carried out in the classroom • To develop a profile of a learner's strengths and needs in relation to their effective functioning in the classroom

  8. www.sentrain.net Goal setting Example of a SMART goal: B will describe the seven steps of the process of mummification with five of the seven steps correct by week 5 of an 8 week topic on Egyptian History.

  9. www.sentrain.net Intervention section • The objectives of this section are to : • Introduce a range of strategies for meeting the needs of learners with speech, language & communication needs • Emphasise the most widely used and successful strategies • Identify general principles which can be applied in various settings • Provide an overview of a number of specific interventions

  10. www.sentrain.net Intervention setting • Example interventions: • Provide an explanation of what mummification is • Outline the key concepts/ideas behind mummification and its religious significance • List the 7 separate stages of mummification in the correct order and place the numbers from 1-7 at the beginning of each step • Cut the separate stages into strips • Jumble them, and have the students re-arrange in correct order from 1-7 • Paste/glue on separate sheet of paper

  11. www.sentrain.net Case studies • To provide examples of a range of learners illustrating: • assessed needs of the individual • interventions which have been put in place • learner’s response to the interventions and progress made

  12. www.sentrain.net Course Forums How can you reduce the emphasis on written recording of work for pupils who find it challenging, by allowing alternative recording methods? Sometimes in year 2 there is a differentiation in recording technique with those that are most able being given a word bank and introduction to the task and left to retell a story, whilst others can be given a series of picture clues to stimulate memory and perhaps a few guide lines on the page to encourage just a couple of carefully formed sentences. • Tutors and students can communicate through online discussions • You will introduce yourselves on the Forums today

  13. www.sentrain.net Accreditation • To pass the course you need to: • Read all the course content • Complete 2 quizzes • Take part a minimum number of forum discussions • Write 3 goals • Write 3 interventions • Attend face to face sessions as arranged by your tutor • Complete the post course evaluation • 90 days after you have finished the course (and passed) complete the goal attainment scaling
