  6. www.sentrain.net Understanding section • The objectives of this section are to: • provide a definition of MSI • describe common causes of MSI • to provide a summary of the main senses and how they work together • to discuss factors affecting how a child uses their senses • to explore the implications of MSI for: • communication • access to information • movement and mobility • development

  7. www.sentrain.net Assessment section • The objectives of this section are to: • describe the knowledge and skills required to undertake assessments • outline the process of multi agency assessment • provide a summary of various forms of assessment including: • formal and informal assessments • functional assessment • objective assessments • environmental assessment • social care assessment • describe  the teacher’s role in supporting assessment

  8. www.sentrain.net Goal setting Example SMART goal: Child Y will receive a consistent response to her communication of a desire for ‘more’ during her daily tacpac sessions.

  9. www.sentrain.net Intervention section • The objectives of this section are to: • emphasise the child as the centre • describe multi agency working • highlight individual learning styles • focus on: • communication • access to the environment • differentiating materials • the curriculum • discuss the role of education professionals • emphasise the importance of recognising and celebrating outcomes • provide signposts to other resources • provide guidance on where to go for more support

  10. www.sentrain.net Intervention setting • Example interventions: • Video child Y during a Tacpac session to observe her facial expressions and body language • Record the observed responses onto an affective communication assessment observation sheet and identify actions displayed which are felt to show pleasure • Consistently respond to the identified response by saying “more, Y wants more” and repeating the specific activity • Look for any increase in the identified action • Include the identified communication in Y’s communication passport to ensure a consistent response in all settings

  11. www.sentrain.net Case studies • To provide examples of a range of learners illustrating: • describe the needs of a number of children with MSI • show how these needs are being met • demonstrate the progress they are making

  12. www.sentrain.net Course Forums Choose one student and reflect on what you have learned as a result of watching these videos. I have learnt a great deal from all the case studies.  Hearing from all the practitioners in the school that support Rebecca and Joshua was really interesting. I felt that I had a very good idea of how the intervenors were supporting the children and meeting their individual needs. Watching these videos affirmed the actions I am already doing and gave me lots of new ideas too.  • Tutors and students can communicate through online discussions • You will introduce yourselves on the Forums today

  13. www.sentrain.net Accreditation • To pass the course you need to: • Read all the course content • Complete 2 quizzes • Take part a minimum number of forum discussions • Write 3 goals • Write 3 interventions • Attend face to face sessions as arranged by your tutor • Complete the post course evaluation • 90 days after you have finished the course (and passed) complete the goal attainment scaling
