  1. Tourism In Couva Geography Form 4

  2. Couva • Location of Couva:10° 25' N 61° 27' W • Population:3,572 persons as of 1980

  3. Couva-Description • Couva is a constituency located on the western coast of Trinidad. It is bordered on the west by the Gulf of Paria, to the east by the St. George and Nariva districts, the north, by Tunapuna/Piarco, and the south by the Victoria district. • The town of Couva is a major hub, serving as the administrative centre of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation.

  4. Couva-Description • On the outskirts of the town of Couva, there is a 4000 ft. x 50 ft. airway, which serves the National Helicopter Services Limited and Briko Air Services.

  5. Tourism In Couva • One feature in Couva that can be developed into a tourist attraction is the old sugarcane mill near the Point Lisas Industrial Estate.

  6. Tourism In Couva • The mill dates back to about 75 years or more, and can be used as a historical attraction. It can be refurbished and made into a museum to show how sugar was refined from sugarcane those many years ago. All the equipment there can show tourists what once was a major industry in Trinidad.

  7. Tourism In Couva • Adjacent to the ruined mill, there is an old golf course. To help attract more tourists, it can be refurbished and expanded, adding to the value tourists will get. While the children look at the wonders of how sugar was made, adults can relax on the golf course.

  8. Tourism-Justification • The sugarcane mill and the golf course can be developed into tourist attractions because an airfield is located in the same region. • Although the runway is small, it can be easily and cheaply expanded to accommodate larger planes. • Another reason why it is easy to develop the industry here is because due to the influx of tourism, hotels will be built, allowing the locale to be hired, adding to the amount of revenue the area produces per person.

  9. Tourism-Challenges • The area will be faced by numerous challenges to build the tourist industry here, but will receive extraordinary benefits if it succeeds. • One of the challenges the area will face, is to get the necessary funds to begin development. Secondly, the area will have to undergo a huge adjustment, from a business class to a tourism class sector. The nearby Point Lisas Industrial Estate will have to be more controlled, so that the pollution does not affect the tourists.

  10. Toursim-Benefits • Now as to the benefits, hotels will begin to spring up all along the way to accommodate the tourists. Locals can act as guides and be employed in the hotels. • Business will experience a boom as people come to buy and carry home souvenirs of the trip. Restaurants can also develop, showing the tourists the cooking of Trinidad. • All this will hugely benefit the government, adding additional revenue to its GDP.
