  6. AMP4 company preferred strategy • SD at heart. Needs careful interpretation of legislation • clear objectives • complimentary control of diffuse • benefits will take time. Some objectives better targeted by WFD than current drivers? • sustainable cost to customers (willingness to pay?) • cost benefit to inform customers • sewer flooding and maintenance

  7. how does AMP4 fit future requirements? • law of diminishing return • point vs diffuse • coastal eutrophication infraction • new bathing water directive • uncertainty over “good” status • potential WFD “gaps” • how much can point control deliver? • zero emissions of Priority Hazadous Substances

  8. challenges • taking account of long term planning needs to.. • avoid of abortive expenditure • ensure sustainable development • avoid infraction • cater for unknown drivers (eg endocrine disruptors) • towards WFD • 6 year cycle vs 5 yr AMP

  10. conclusions • never have the challenges and opportunities been greater • water industry has key role to play • all industry sectors must play their part • implementation of EU legislation in a sustainable way a challenge for industry, customers and regulators alike
