Calgary Workers’ Resource Centre • Non Profit/Charitable organization • Provides education & advocacy for workers in the Calgary area • Assists workers access their employment rights and benefits such as: • Employment Standards • Employment Insurance • Basic assistance with WCB • CPP Disability Benefits • Human Rights in the workplace complaints

  4. Funding CWRC also acknowledges the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission for the funds raised while hosting volunteer casino events as well the benevolence of local unions and private donations.

CWRC Services • Community Outreach and Public Education • Workshops—classroom teaching • Community Outreach—festivals, conferences, conventions, events, booths, etc. • Case Work • Individual client appointments • Filing claims, complaints & appeals • Advocacy • NewAlbertaWorkers • Educate TFWs and other New to Alberta workers about health & safety rights/responsibilities in the workplace • Provide resources & support for accessing information/using these rights

Education & Outreach • The CWRC provides plain language educational workshops to the Calgary community on employment-related rights, legislation and benefits. • In 2015, the CWRC presented 99workshops, which were attended by 965 individuals from vulnerable populations. • 98% of participants agreed that the workshops increased their knowledge of work-related rights and benefits

  10. CASEWORK In 2015, we had a 96% success rate and the highest client financial entitlement since CWRC opened its doors in 2003.

NewAlbertaWorkers (NAW) The NewAlbertaWorkers program was created in collaboration with the Alberta Workers’ Health Centre and the Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative (both in Edmonton, AB). In 2013, SSEC Canada was convicted of several counts of violating Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (failing to ensure the health & safety of its workers) from a 2009 workplace incident that killed two workers and seriously injured two other workers – all TFWs from China. SSEC Canada was sentenced for these violations, resulting in the order to pay amounts to fund the NAW program. CWRC was a part of the NAW program until August 2015.

Community Partners Calgary Chinese Community Service Association (CCCSA): offer bi-weekly employment rights and benefits clinics in Mandarin & Cantonese for workers from the Chinese community who have difficulty communicating in English (volunteer interpreters provided by CCCSA). Clients who cannot speak English must book an appointment in advance by contacting CCCSA at 403-265-8446. North East Family Connections: provide office space once a week at their location to enhance the accessibility of our services to residents of NE Calgary. A Punjabi-speaking CWRC Case Worker serves clients from the location twice a week (services by prior appointment only - 403-264-8100, ext. 24).

Community Partners Cont’d • The CWRC has been an active member of the Calgary Urban Aboriginal Initiative's human rights domain since 2007. • The CWRC frequently works in collaboration with staff at the following agencies in order to provide assistance to mutual clients: • Calgary Catholic Immigration Society • Calgary Immigrant Women's Association • Centre for Newcomers • Immigrant Services Calgary

  16. 2015 was an amazing year… • Every dollar of core funding invested in the CWRC in 2015 (not including funding allocated for the Employment Rights, Obligations and Benefits Education Program or the New Alberta Workers’ Program) generated a return of more than $10.23 in financial entitlements for vulnerable workers in the community. • In the 13-years the Centre has been open, CWRC clients have received financial entitlements totaling more than $21 MILLION.

The future is Bright… • 2016 is shaping up to be a pretty incredible year already. • So far (January 1 – April 30, 2016) we are reporting a 97% success rate in the Casework program with over $2,796,943 total in Client Financial Entitlements. • We have plans to further engage in dialogue with governments and other stakeholders in an attempt to promote policies and legislation that will improve the working conditions of workers in Alberta and beyond. • Expand our services beyond Calgary and area • First during Fort McMurray fires to assist workers affected • June we will be doing a 6 month pilot for all of Alberta • And much much more….
