Brief Timeline - PEC University of Technology • 1921 - Mugalpura Engineering College at Lahore (now in Pakistan) on 9 November 1921. • 1931 - College got affiliated to Punjab University, Lahore. • 1947 - East Punjab College of Engineering, Roorkee (India) • 1950 - Punjab Engineering College • 1953 (Dec.) - PEC at Chandigarh (present campus) • 2003 (Oct.) - notified as a Deemed University by GoI • 2009 (June) - Name of the college has been changed to PEC University of Technology. • 2009 (Sep.) - Name to be decided by Board of Governors in the light of UGC directive to deemed universities. Central Library PEC University of Technology • Three storied building having an area of about 27,000 sq. feet. • Printed volume collection: 1,10,000. • Number of users: 2000+ • Centrally air-conditioning facility with 250 seats in two reading halls • Open access system to its print collection maximize their use • Multimedia section having a collection of • 450 CD-ROMs, • 581 video cassettes, and • 76 floppies • Services: Reference service; reprographic facility; access to CD-ROM databases, electronic resources and to the Internet • Automated operations: Circulation Section, Serial Control, Reference Section, Acquisition Section, Book bank (General as well as SC/ST), Bar-coded Membership Cards, Office. Access to electronic journals • Individual Title Access: Free electronic journal access against print subscription • Access to electronic journal in Public Domain: Provides links to electronic resources that are available in public domain free of cost • Consortium Access: As AICTE Supported Member of INDEST Consortium NACLIN 2009

INDEST Consortium • The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India set-up the “Indian National Digital Library in Science and Technology (INDEST) Consortium” in 2003. • Offers high quality collection of full text electronic resources to the academic community. • Foresees to bring about a qualitative change in the electronic information environment of technical education institutes of India • by subscribing to several full-text electronic resources as well as bibliographic databases. • sharing maximum benefits it offers in terms of lower subscription rates and better terms of agreement with the publishers. • The Consortium subscribes to over 12,000 electronic journals from a number of publishers and aggregators.   12. Users’ access to electronic journals All buildings in the campus i.e. departments and centres, hostels, and library are connected through intranet and the campus is also Wi-Fi enabled. Access to electronic journals is being provided both through OPAC as well as Website. • OPAC: The URL of individual titles is integrated with the OPAC so that users can be able to access the electronic journals through it • Website: The publishers’ URLs are linked through the library web page. Staff Training and User Education • Staff members are sent to various training programmes that enabled them to provide qualitative services to their users. • The idea is to ‘Train-the-Trainer’ as per the need of the user. • A member of Library staff is deputed to provide support to the library users with new electronic journals facilities • Library staff members also provide personal help to users on electronic journal service and conduct user education programmes. Troubleshooting and Support from INDEST • Providing required consultation and expert advice in implementing new technologies. • Providing PEC Library with web-based Complaint Monitoring Interface (E-RAMS@INDEST). • Providing web-based instructions to handle troubleshooting for different resources. Roadmap for Future • Subject access to electronic journal collection: A comprehensive database of all electronic journal title for all publishers including all the appropriate metadata tags like keywords, subject headings, title, homepage URL. Also each journal title will be linked directly to its home web page. • Online help module: Aim of this service would be to provide instructions to users on how to use the electronic journal service. The instructions will be included on how to perform search or browse the journal titles; how to print or save a particular article. • Alerting service: CLPEC is planning to start alerting service (Contents list) for new issue of various journals for its users. users will be also be informed about new or changed journals through email.
