  3. TR’s Presidency • Presidential term: 1901-1909 • Accomplishments: • National Reclamation Act (1902)—irrigation • United States Forest Service (1905)—land and water use • Hepburn Act (1906)—railroads • Pure Food and Drug Act and Meat Inspection Act (1906)—public health

Ballinger-Pinchot Affair • Secretary of Interior: Richard Ballinger (Taft’s choice) • Wanted businesses to have unrestricted development • Head of U.S. Forest Service: Pinchot (not a favorite with Taft) • Wanted land to be studied for best use • Ballinger allowed businesses to buy land in Alaska • Pinchot said corruption was involved • Taft fired Pinchot • Pinchot became hero, Ballinger later resigned, Taft not popular
