  2. A few Words of Wisdom Good morning, South Seminole. This is Mr. Bess, Assistant Principal We’ve all heard the words “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” That’s not true, is it? Anyone who has been the victim of harmful gossip knows that — unlike broken bones that will eventually mend — harmful gossip can leave wounds that never completely heal. So why gossip? Sometimes people gossip because they think that by making others look bad they make themselves look better. For some, gossip is a mean-spirited way of gaining power over others, or a kind of verbal “ganging up” on someone. Others gossip because of jealousy, anger, and a real desire to hurt others.

  3. It’s important to notice gossip, and then do the right thing. Ask for verification of the negative information, refuse to listen, or politely change the subject. And then remember this old American proverb: A word of kindness is seldom spoken in vain. With something to think about, this is Mr. Bess. Make it a great day… or not. The choice is yours.
