  2. Aims and Objectives  This course will examine the Modelling Strand of the National Curriculum, covering the following areas. • to look at the skills required to be taught. • to consider how the County Scheme of Work supports teaching and learning in this strand. • to consider available and suitable software.

  3. Course Schedule ·Introduction ·Accessing the resources online ·Welsh National Curriculum 2000. ·County Scheme of Work for IT – overview ·What is Modelling? ·  Why teach Modelling? ·Areas of Modelling · Modelling Resources Donna Duck & Chucky, Duck Game Badger Trails Zoombinis Mountain Rescue ·Hands-on with resource ·Evaluation and Close.

  4. Course Content Online http://acce.cardiffschools.net Select ‘Primary’ from the menu. Access the course booklet online, and new ACCE IT Scheme of Work. To view content, login as a guest. The enrolment key is acce05996

  5. Modelling – IT National Curriculum • Pupils should be taught to: • Key Stage 1 • use ICT-based models or simulations to try things out and explore aspects of real and imaginary situations, e.g. use a mouse to move items of clothing displayed on the screen to dress a child or teddy bear, use an adventure game. • Key Stage 2 • explore the effect of changing variables in simulations and similar packages, to ask and answer questions of the ‘What would happen if...?’ type, e.g. change the values in a given Logo procedure and see the results • recognise patterns and relationships in the results obtained from ICT-based models or simulations, predicting the outcomes of different decisions that could be made, • e.g. use a prepared spreadsheet to enter sales, income andpayments to the school tuck shop and produce a short report to identify sales for each item and how changes could improve profitability, use a mathematical adventure game. • +÷ – x

  6. ACCE IT Scheme of Work Presently separate to the main scheme, although the suggested sequence of units fits into the outline plan. Not all the software suggested is required in order to complete the requirements of the NC Programmes of Study. Year 1 – Donna Duck or Granny’s Garden / Roamer Year 2 – Donna Duck or Granny’s Garden / Roamer Year 3 – Badger Trails / Logo Year 4 – Badger Trails / Logo Year 5 – Zoombinis / Logo Year 6 – Spreadsheet modelling.

  7. What is Modelling? • Modelling is… • The ability to simulate real or imaginary situations and to explore and develop different environments. • Modelling allows… • Children to ask “what if” questions to help them understand the underlying rules of a situation

  8. Why teach Modelling? • Develop thinking skills • Children become more effective learners • Develop problem solving skills • Children are natural modellers eg. role play • Helps the children to see relationships between cause and effect • Provides opportunities for collaborative activities • Because the IT National Curriculum orders require it !

  9. Areas of Modelling • Adventures • Simulations • Logo • Spreadsheets • Graphical
