Summary of 2001 • 2001 Characterized by Rethinking & Refocus • Further deterioration in economic environment • Declining membership and revenue • Forced us to change our strategies • examined existing services, sought out new revenue sources and re-structuring the organization • Strategy focused on strategic alliances • by combining our resources, can accomplish more • AP* organizations, MoU with other regional Internet Assoc • US Chamber of Commerce, Conference endorsement Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Summary - 2002 (up to now) • The negative economic trend continued • Strategies still focused on alliance/partnership • Sought advice from the various stakeholders • Change of Chairperson • Hiro Hotta to Toru Takahashi at the end of Jan 2002 • Relocation of the Secretariat Office • Co-locate with Iajapan since February 02 Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Membership (as of 8/26/02) • Members • 2 Large, 4 Small, 2 LDC/NPO, and 9 Individuals • Type of members • ISPs, national Internet association, RIR, research org, domain name registry, conference mgt service, national NIC, and individuals • Restructuring funding scheme and new sources of funding are critical for survival • Individual membership & operating expenses Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Activities in 2002 (up to now) • Endorsed Conferences • APRICOT 2002 as a Gold sponsor • sharing complimentary registrations with individuals who are in need (East Timor, China, Nepal for 2002) • CommunicAsia-SG held in June 2002 • Published Newsletter #7/#8 and e-Update • #7/8 featuring AP* org. and IXs • #9 - to be published later this year Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Activities of 2002 (cont - 1) • Coordination effort with AP* [ap-star] Org • APNG, APNIC, APAN, APNIC, APTld, MINC, APOPS, APDIP, AP Outreach, and APRICOT • Articles in APIA Newsletters • AGM at APRICOT 2002 • Presented a Proposal to APRICOT • APIA provide a legal umbrella to APRICOT • Open Discussion at AGM in March • Open Discussion at IETF in July Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Activities of 2002 (cont - 2) • Forums at APRICOT 2002 (73 participants) • Internet Industry Country Report • TW, KR, SG, HK, JP, CN, NZ, MY, and KH • IX Panel Discussion • IX Activities Continued • Additional meeting at IETF in Yokohama • objective is security and targeting major IXs • Workshop planned AP Outreach program • Seeking source of funding Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Activities of 2002 (cont - 3) • Meeting during IETF in Yokohama • IX Operators Forum with the major IXs on 7/16 • APIA - APRICOT Joint Meeting on 7/17 • APIA & APRICOT Reached a Consensus • to merge the two body • to fill APIA Board with stakeholders from APRICOT • The new APIA Board will lead the way to move forward Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Current Undertaking • APIA - APOPS Jointly Organized Forums • 2-day forum on 2 & 3 Sept in Kokura, Japan • Topics on Internet Security, Wireless LAN, IPv6, and IX • Merging with APRICOT • APIA & APRICOT Joint Meeting will be held on 2 Sept to discuss about the next steps • This is a Huge Responsibility for APIA • APIA provides legal umbrella for APRICOT Asia & Pacific Internet Association

  11. APIA & APRICOT Update • 4 New APIA Board • Abhisak Chulya, Yong Wan Ju, James Seng , and Philip Smith • Selection Based on • Recommendations by the Members/APRICOT Exco • The Next Steps • Elect Officers • Meet in Kokura next week Asia & Pacific Internet Association

APIA & APRICOT Update (cont) • Priorities set for the Interim Board (as Pindar stated) • Stabilize APRICOT Internal Operation • be able to deliver a consistent quality event • minimize financial and operational risks • Strategic Focus and Plans for APRICOT • refine value proposition to participants and sponsors • create the ability to scale year after year • A Success of APRICOT 2003 Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Strategic Focus for 2002 • Problems and Issues • financial - negative economic environment and funding model • management - human resources • Strategies - Partnership • emphasis on collaboration and coordination • especially with AP* organization, Industry Assoc, & NICs • Also others, such as other Regional ISPA, ITU-T, APT, and IX operators in the US and Europe Asia & Pacific Internet Association

  14. Plans for 2002 • The Next Steps - decided by the new Board • Expected • Focus, shift to APRICOT • IX related forum to be continued • Continued collaboration with other organizations and individuals experts • Formal Election at the next AGM in Taipei Asia & Pacific Internet Association
