  1. Foreshadowing A literary device in which an author hints at certain plot developments that will come later in the story. It is used to interest the reader, viewer or listener about how the story will proceed and mentally prepare them for how it will unfold.

Foreshadowing • Examples: The Necklace • Madame Forrestier easily lends MathildeLoisel the diamond necklace, with no concern or apprehension. • Foreshadows the necklace being fake, rather than real diamonds. • If it was real (and really worth $36,000 francs) she would likely have been more hesitant to let her friend borrow it.

  3. Foreshadowing • Examples: The Necklace • The jeweler says, “It was not I who sold her the necklace, I merely supplied the case.” • Most expensive jewelry is sold in a case to protect it. Madame Forrestieronly purchased the case from the jeweler, which foreshadows that the necklace was not a real diamond necklace.
