  2. 1. What does the ABET stand for? The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology

  3. 2. Define the engineering profession? According to ABET : Engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. Note: Engineering is a profession like medicine, law, etc. that aspires to high standards of conduct and recognizes its responsibility to the general public.

Compare scientist and engineer, and state the difference Engineer - Applies knowledge of math and the physical sciences to the efficient design and construction of usable devices, structures and processes Scientist - Like an engineer, but a primary goal is the expansion of knowledge and understanding physical processes.

  5. 4. List the elements of professionalism? • Professionalism is an aspirational standard, the essential elements of which are: • Competence • Personal integrity, responsibility and • accountability • Public obligation

  6. 5. Is it okay for an engineer to design a building with a known potential problem? State the reasons for your answer. No, It’s not allowed. The reason: Designer should be 100% sure that the desig is safe and reliable (based on approved standard).

Is it possible for an engineer who is responsible of designing the electrical system of a building to escape punishment if an electrical problem has occurred in a building and caused injuries? State the reasons for your answer. There is two possibilities; Yes, it is possible if the engineer can guarantee that electrical problem is not coming from the design. No, it is not possible if the electrical problem is coming from the design.

What is the difference between a profession and occupation? • Profession is • Requires specialized and highly skilled knowledge. • Requires academic training. • Is regulated by professional bodies. • Examination of competence. • Function of professional work is vital to society. • Professionals enjoy higher social status. • Compensation is higher than other occupations • Professionals must perform under a standard of professional behavior that requires adherence to the highest principles of legal and ethical conduct.

  9. 8. Is it possible to be a professional if you don’t have a BS degree? Why? No, you have to have a degree in Engineering (BS or BE) as a minimum requirement. According to US regulation, one of the requirements for licensing Professional Engineer is graduated from an ABET accredited four year college or university program.

  10. 9. Does the engineer have to consider the safety and reliability of a product during design or service? Give an example to support your answer. • Yes, of course. • Because the cost of safety and reliability is very high. It can takes human injuries or human life's. • Example: Car design • Safety and Reliability consideration: • Crash testing • Safety features: ABS, Airbag, Safety-belt, etc. • Parts/component lifetime performance.

  11. 10. What does an engineer do? Give three examples to support your answers. • Design products. • Design machinery to build and test these products. • Design Plants in which those products are made. • Design the systems that ensure the quality and efficiency of the manufacturing process. • Design, plan and supervise the construction of buildings, highways, transit systems. • Develop and implement ways to extract, process and use raw materials such as petroleum and natural gas.
