  1. ProjectWise V8i OverviewPart 2 Gary Cochrane Technical Director – Geospatial Sales NAOU

  2. Review primary modules • Each solution is comprised of one or more of the following server modules • PW Integration Server • PW Caching Server • PW Web Server • PW Web View Server • PW Publishing Server • PW InterPlot Server

  3. PW “Classic” Configuration

  4. ProjectWise Web Server • Optional component included in most deployments • Provides basic content management functionality • Log-in, search, modify properties, simple check-out • No reference file support, title block support, workspace support, etc. • In order to view drawings from browser • Requires addition of ProjectWise Publishing Server • Intended for “casual” users, not power users • Still requires PW Passport license to access

  5. Multiple Web Configurations • With V8i Edition, PW Web Server supports two configurations: • Standard Microsoft IIS Web Servers • User organization designs their web pages, and incorporates PW Web parts using ASPX • Microsoft SharePoint Web Servers • User Organization designs their web pages, and incorporates PW Web parts using SharePoint design tools • In either case, organization purchases PW Web Server

  6. What SharePoint is… • SharePoint is a collaboration tool from Microsoft • Allows an organization to quickly/easily build interactive web collaboration sites • Included with Windows 2003 Server • So basically, it’s free for internal use • For External Use • Must purchase SharePoint Portal server • As a collaboration tool, SharePoint provides: • Calendars, lists, tasks, discussions… • And yes, it also provides limited document management

  7. What SharePoint is not… • SharePoint is not an Engineering Content Management solution • No MicroStation or AutoCAD integration • No Integration with Bentley vertical applications • No plotting integration • No Indexing / full text search (for CAD files) • No distributed storage • All files stored on SharePoint server • No publishing / web viewing of CAD documents

  8. Our goal with SharePoint • Keep the engineering content stored in ProjectWise • And allow it to be accessed from a SharePoint collaboration site • But, don’t do it by copying (duplicating) the files to SharePoint

  13. Introducing ProjectWise StartPoint • ProjectWise “Lite” • No ProjectWise Server technology involved • Therefore no advanced functionality • Uses Microsoft SharePoint as the back-end • Allows MicroStation to edit files stored in SharePoint • Also supports AutoCAD • Intended for very small workgroups

  14. PW StartPoint Positioning • No ProjectWise Server technology • Therefore no server cost • Client requires PW Passport • MicroStation users on SELECT get PW Passport • Therefore no client cost for MicroStation users • Possible revenue opportunity for AutoCAD users • Since they don’t have a PW Passport

  19. Summary • This should help you understand common ProjectWise Web configuration scenarios • In the last session, we will also look at Geospatial components of ProjectWise
