To form the imperfect of a French verb, drop the – ons ending of the present-tense nous for me and add the appropriate ending: - ais, -ais, -ait, -ions. – iez, - aient. • Example • Parler (nous parlons) Finir (nous finissons) Vendre(nous vendons) • Je parlais je finissais je vendais • Tu parlaistufinissaistuvendais • Il/elleparlaitil/ellefinissaitil/ellevendait • Nous parlions nous finissions nous vendions • vousparliezvousfinissiezvousvendiez • Ils/ellesparlaientils/ellesfinissaientils/ellesvendaient

  3. Reminder • Etre is the only French verb that is irregular in the imperfect. • être • J’ étais • Tu étais • Il/elleétait • Nous étions • Vous étiez • Ils/ellesétaient

  4. As in many other tenses, spelling change verbs, that is, verb which end in -cer and -ger, have minor spelling changes in the imperfect. Example: Manger agacer Je mangeais Tu mangeais j'agaçais Il/elle mangeait tu agaçais Nous mangeions il/elle agaçait Vous mangeiez nous agacions ils/elles mangeaient vous agaciez ils/elles agaçaient
