  1. THROUGH MY EYES England / 2005 / English Autumn So we've been staying in England for our third season of the year. There is already the autumn here after the nice spring and the exceptionally good summer…The whole English autumn is full of preparations for Christmas celebrations. Christmas started being prepared immediately at the beginning of autumn although Halloween (31/10) and Guy Fawkes` Night (5/11) precede it. The British seem to love holidays and they must have at least one holiday a month to be satisfied. And when there are no holidays in a calendar, they must celebrate anything of their history at least. And the history of Great Britain - just marvelous! Actually it is the history of single parts of United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. It's worth getting to know it. student sexty Josef Chrpa

  2. Wales • We visited south and middle Wales (Cymru) during our autumn travelling around the island. Of course we visited the proud capital of Wales, Cardif. There is a quiet nice castle in the middle of the city and the city itself is relatively a busy metropolis. But the surroundings of Cardif is not too much. Not even the sea is nice enough. But the scenery is much better a few kilometers far westward, in Swansea. The peninsula, the port city Swansea is a gateway for, is even a protected natural reservation with almost no possibility of entering by a car. There are large beaches further westwards with astonishing difference between tide and low tide. Sometimes the difference is hundreds of meters, which is typical for the whole Britain. We also visited the region of a well-known magician Merlin in the west part of Wales. The landscape is mysterious and beautiful. We were going by historical train through The Brecon Beacons National Park with the stop at Pontsticill Resevoir.

  3. There are a lot of Roman Legions and Celtic monuments . The excavations of The Roman Spa and the amphitheatre in the area of Newport are beautiful as well. I think Wales is certainly worth visiting. And besides, when you listen to Welsh language, English language seems to be so simple!

  4. GuyFawkesNight • Another big autumn holiday in November is Guy Fawkes Night, similar to our Witches Holiday. My We enjoyed it in the castle Sherborn, a beautiful romantic setting from the century. The number of people was almost incredible. The total traffic jam everywhere. A big bonfire and grandiose fireworks took place by the castle lake. Of course, everywhere there were stands with various refreshment, carousels and life music. After the biggest crowds with little children had left, it was quite a beautiful evening.

  5. Nelson Ship • The celebrations of two-hundred anniversary of the victorious battle by Trafalgar were special chapter of autumn 2005. Actually, the admiral Nelson celebrations. We couldn`t resist to look at Victory ship in Portsmouth. It was worth seeing it. People in historical costumes, a gorgeous ship and the beautiful atmosphere of the port remembering the glory of the King Navy. Moreover there is also the modern part of Portsmouth port with a real life. I definitely recommend visiting this place in England!

  7. Salisbury Cathedral • And I also wouldn´t like to forget our visit to Salisbury. This town has a few real temptations. Besides its characteristic center where old architecture is tastefully connected with new one it is especially the area of the cathedral and the cathedral itself. It has the tallest tower in England and it hides one of four existing copies of the Magna Charta which is the "Big Document of Freedom" from 1215. I`m glad I could see this document.

  8. Autumn Walking • Long walks, especially by the sea shore, belong to autumn in England. About the most famous one is the longest English tourist route which leads from Minehead at Bristol Bay to South Haven Point. It is 1 000 km long and goes through gorgeous sceneries of the national park Exmoor at Bristol Bay, via dramatic cliffs Land`s End on the southernmost point of England, passing picturesque old cliffs in area Lyme Bay (Dorset). • Naturally we completed some parts of this route and it was a really nice trip. We succeed to find gorgeous several million years old fossils the Dorset area. • When the weather is beautiful, individual sections of this route are very busy. Tourism is one of the most widespread activities which English (by the way rather lazy) keep.

  9. Oxford, Chester a golf • What else to say about one of the most famous university of the world? • Chester - for Czech tourists probably a less known town. Breathtaking as Oxford. It has the admirable history, the Roman Legion XX established it in the first century A. D. • And finally, the golf (British national sport ) birthplace in Scotland - St. Andrews. The weather here is exceptionally good for this sport so people can enjoy amazingly clipped greens and rolling little balls as much as possible.
