Background NHS England Mental Health & Justice Programme funded 18 month Pilot project Early intervention and prevention focus The POWER project is a targeted early intervention project working across Southend, Essex and Thurrock (SET) Overall aims of the project We want to prevent the criminalisation and school exclusion of young people transitioning from primary to secondary education Our aim is to achieve this by increasing their emotional resilience to cope with difficulties and challenges at home, school and in their communities

  3. What do we offer? POWER practitioners offer voluntary, free 1 to 1 support to children and young people aged 8-13 and their parents/carers to help them develop ways of coping with challenging situations at home, at school, and in their local communities Children and young people POWER seeks to help will be: School: struggling to engage at school, attending irregularly Youth Justice: will have had contact with or be known to the police (perhaps as a victim, an involved person or witness to a crime) but they will not yet have been criminalised (i.e. they will not have been convicted of an offence) Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health: need early emotional wellbeing intervention Children and young people who are already being supported by Social Care, the Youth Offending Service or a mental health service are not eligible for support from the POWER project.

What do we do? • We offer up to 12 1 to 1 sessions in tailored, targeted interventions • We use a variety of interventions and approaches to engage the young person, and to support them and their family • We hold regular reviews including the school and other professionals involved with the family (an MDT approach) • We aim to build young people’s individual resilience • And support parents/ carers and schools to build the child’s resilience • We also provide consultation and signposting to other services • We are also supporting the development of training for individual schools and MATs

Feedback: School teacher feedback to POWER practitioner “I would like to pass on how impressed I am with the work she has and is planning to do, she appears to have made a connection with mum and young person already.  Without the knowledge and support she has provided to us we would have been unaware of the situation regarding home life and the concerns she has.” July 2019 A parent to a POWER practitioner “Thank you for your email, all the information and the effort you are going to, to help us.   10. Who can refer? • Essex Police through the Youth Justice Team / Out-of-Court Disposal Panel • Education services and agencies • Primary and secondary schools • Special schools • Primary and Secondary Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) • Essex Health and Justice Service (based in police custody suites) • Voluntary and Community Sector organisations • Other agencies and services depending upon their remit

  11. How do you refer? The consent form and an electronic link to the referral form will be sent to you / your organisation.
