  5. Website: Preliminaries • 1. Website: http://stars.wayne.edu • StarsCanbe opened directly from the home page or linked to from the Student or Faculty tabs in Pipeline. • Everyone at WSU with a valid AccessID/Password combination can logon to Stars. What they can see depends on their role.

  6. Preliminaries • 2. Roles: Student, Faculty and Advisor • There are primarily three user roles: • Student – has registered for a class at WSU • Faculty – has taught a class at WSU • Advisors –authorized by a Stars Department, Division or Project Manager • A user can have more than one role

Roles: Student, Faculty and Advisor • Once logged on, the user is be presented with the Stars Module Menu (SMM) with buttons corresponding to each Stars module to which her roles entitles her. The modules include: • Advising/Student Profile – for viewing student data, students only their own and advisors any student • Faculty – for obtaining data of interest to instructors including Class Lists, Student Evaluation of Teaching, Advisee information • Reports –a wide range including students in programs, majors, courses, cohort tracking, general education, advisor/advisee • Admin – for advisors to see their own profile and managers to maintain advisors in their department or division

  9. II. Advising / Student Profile Module: 1. Individual Student Data • Advising/Student Profile Module • Most often used by Advisors • Provides individual student data for any WSU student • Initiated by clicking the first button on the SMM

Individual Student Data • Advising/Student Profile Module • Menu Options: • Select, Contact, Academic, Classes, Trans/PVED, GPA’s,Deg Audit, Reg/EAA, Tests • Each has a set of submenu options. If you prefer scrolling to clicking, we offer an interface which combines submenus • Selection is most efficient if you select the student with either • Access ID (xy1234), or • 9-digit Banner ID (012345678) • Note the check box entitled “Go Directly to Student Comments”

Advisor Comments: Levels of Privacy Selecting a new comment, we see all the levels of privacy the advisor can permit: All Advisors (Default) Only Me Department Advisors Division Advisors All Advisors and Student Only Me and Student Department Advisors and Student Division Advisors and Student Once inserted, the advisors will be able to edit or delete their own comments and only view ones with appropriate permissions

GPA CalculatorSatisfactory Academic Progress Students receiving Federal Financial Aid are now required to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress as a prerequisite to renewal. There are 3 requirements for Undergraduates: Pace > 2/3 GPA > 2.0 Attempted + Transfer Credits <180 By definition, Pace = (Passed Credits + Transfer Credits)/(Attempted Credits + Transfer Credits)

GPA CalculatorSatisfactory Academic Progress The GPA calculator: Collects the Academic History of a Student and displays it Displays classes for which the student is registered along with selectable hypothetical grades Displays lines for future semesters which allows the user to select the number of GPA credits, GPA, and Transfer Credits Then by clicking the Compute button, simulated Pace, GPA, and Attempted + Transfer credits and flags violations.

  25. III. Class List Based Reports1. Student Profile Module • Class list reports can be opened from several modules. There are two class list report pages that you can toggle between. Each has Class Information reports as well as SET links when available. • Registration Detail (RD)Gives Registration Codes, EAA grades and the end of the semester final grade as entered at the end of the semester. There is also a new Beta version of this page. • Academic History (AH). It shows up-to-date official grades (reflecting any grade changes). • The primary differences: • EAA grades are displayed in RD but not AH • Official (updated) Final grades are displayed in AH but not RD • Class and Course GPA Averages are computed and compared in AH but not RD

Class List Based Reports Sub-Report: Basic, Report Type: Detail • Banner ID will be hyperlinked to the Student Profile only if you have an Advisor role • AccessID is hyperlinked to a local mail client if one is set up • Grades are linked to a full description of how the credits are treated (e.g., GPA or not), quality points, grade mode, etc. • Click the titles for Help links

  37. III. Class List Based Reports The Retention summary tracks students in a class from the term the class was given until the present term. It plots graduation, retention, and stop-dropouts term by term. Terms: Fall 2010, Winter 2010, Fall 2011, Winter 2012, Fall 2012 Of the 9 students who took this class in Fall 2010, 2 graduated (22%), 2 were retained (22%), and 5 (56%) did not enroll for classes in Fall 2012. Re-Enrollment rate (no degree): 100%, 89%, 56, 33%, 22% Graduation Rates (prior to term): 0%, 11%, 11%, 22%, 22%

  39. IV. Reporting Module (RM) The RM is generally designed for tracking of groups of Students and producing useful statistics for monitoring progress. Here, we focus on two reports: 1a. Students in Programs, Majors, etc. 7a. The Cohort Tracking Tool (CTT).

This sub-report gives pertinent academic details in the output. The output can be downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet. (Warning: You may need to ‘Save As’ a *.xls or *.xlsx file.)

Students in Programs, Majors, … Report 1a – Running a sub-report: Dean’s ListRequires selection of parameters on (2/3) to define ranges There are 732 undergrad students whose active major is MGT and pertinent academic details are listed in the output. We can find out which ones made Dean’s List but not until the end of the term when GPA’s are computed.

Students in Programs, Majors, … Report 1a – Running a sub-report: Non-Attendance Period Suppose you want know which of the 732 students have not yet registered for the Winter 2013 Term. Use the ‘Non-Attendance Period’ sub-report. You may want to select additional variables but many sub-reports such as this one already include the relevant ones in the output.

This sub-report automatically includes fields such as Access ID, Telephone, Holds, Last Degree App, etc.

Cohort Tracking and Census • Some groups are naturally defined in terms standard Banner academic data elements such as new math majors or students taking a specific course in a particular term. • Others are special groupings such as learning communities or FTIACs (undergraduate students that are first time in any college) that are referred to as cohorts • Reporting Group 7 deals with Cohorts and focuses on tracking, retention and graduation
